I have diagnosed with IBSand nothing the doctors have done has worked. What should I do?

When I was 4 years old, my mum took me to the doctors about my bowels, and they just said to add more fibre in my diet and sent me away. Then, when I was 5, I was admitted to hospital because the pain was unbearable and they had to keep me dosed up on pain killers. After that, we kept going back to the doctors, but they kept sending us away, finally, when I was 7, they diagnosed me with IBS. They tried me on movicol, which worked for around a month, then stopped working. So, we then went back and they just told me there was nothing more they could do. Again, we kept going back, but we still didn’t get a solution. Then, when I was 10, they tried me on some lactulose solution which only worked for a couple of months, then ,again, it stopped working completely. Then when I was 11, they tried me on senna, which didn’t actually work at all. They didn’t really know what else to do, so again they just sent me away and told me not to worry. We kept on pushing, but we still didn’t get any solution. Then, when I was 12, they tried me on both senna and lactulose together, and that worked for around 1 month. After that, we kept going back, but it didn’t do me any good. When I was 13, they also tried those things that you stick up your anus to loosen the stools up, but that was a waste of time. Then when I was 14, I went to Yorkshire to visit my grandad, and I went to see his doctor to see if they could try anything different, but they only suggested trying movicol again. So, they put me on a high dosage, and for the first few days it gave me diarrhoea, then again stopped working completely. I am now 15, almost 16, and have tried the movicol since then and I have still had no luck. I am always in agony with my stomach, and quite frequently have to take time off of school because I cannot physically move. Please, somebody help me... I have been needing a solution for 11 years, and so far, I have nothing, and now, I am missing most of my last year in high school because of this.

What types of tests did you have prior to your diagnosis? I'm thinking you need a second opinion. Are you in the UK? St Mark's hospital is a specialist bowel hospital.... Perhaps a consultant there. Now that you're 15 you need to make a list up of all of your questions for the consultant. For example ask them to describe in detail exactly what is going on with your digestive tract and the exact mechanism for the that is causing the pain. Ask for all optio s including worse case scenarios. you need to be the "squeaky door" and insist the GPS and consultants listen to you and answer all of your questions... Bring so.done with you who can be your advocate when you see your gp or consultant. Give them a copy of your list of questions...have it typed so it can be easily read.Good luck. Karen

I did think of something else -- might be worth a try.   Peppermint capsules (time release) help ease the lower intestines,  Fybogel (I've been on this for 40 years) which is also called Metamucil and is a fibre (psyllium husk) mixed with water and I find it soothing to my stomach as well as it seems to absorb acid, and a friend of mine had a lot of success with a probiotics -- she took one that started with Ef...  they are expensive and you need to take for 2 months but may be worth it -- my friend says they changed her life!
