I have feeling of hair in my throat, what can I do?

Hi there,

Really hoping someone on here can offer me some help or advice. I hope this is the correct forum (if not, could someone move it?)

I am in real discomfort, as I have the feeling of a hair or obstruction on the back of my mouth, close to, or on my right tonsil.

I think it is related to post-nasal drip, although even when I am not feeling a wish to cough up phlegm, there is still the feeling of a foreign object in the back of my mouth.

I just feel like I want to go into the back of my mouth, and rip it out.

A consultant previously told me I will always have this problem due to the fact I have a deviated septum, and my tonsils and the stuff around it are larger than what they should be. My regular doctor said he could see phlegm resting on my tonsils.

But the problem is intermittent. I had the nasty feeling of a hair in my throat for around six weeks in August-September 2014, followed by ten months of it between January and October 2015. After a winter break, it came back early last month, and has remained.

I really hope this isn't going to be a regular thing.... I know it is only a minor problem to many people, but it is making me feel quite low, tired and unable to function normally.

I am trying accupuncture right now in the hope it will make a difference, the first time I have ventured away from conventional medicines. But my confidence in this is only limited. There are so many possible solutions, I cannot physically try all of them.

For the record, I have tried antibiotics, antihistamine, decongestant nasal spray and pennicilin to no avail. I also use Difflam mouthwash to numb the feeling of the hair. I have had an endoscopy, and MRI treatment, but nothing has been found of any abnormality.

If anyone can help me out, or has had a similar experience, i'd love to hear from you.

Im 16 and ive had this issue now twice (this being my second time) ive always had issues with my throat since i was younger (tonsillitis, throat infections etc.) but now this hair feeling in the throat? its like the back of my throat it feels like there is just one singular hair and i googled this before when experiencing this the first time and these forums came up and im glad to have read i was not the only one who had been experiencing this issue. its not painful at all its just exhausting , every meal or drink you swallow you can feel it and it just makes you not enjoy your food. and even when not swallowing you can still just feel it present there. although im not sure if its an actual hair you see like others are questioning if its actually a hair or something else. im going to try the plain hot water, the water with lemon, less iced coffee, less diary etc. and see if that helps although it doesnt last long so i wont be sure if any of that actually helped or not. ive seen some people saying it has lasted years for them on and off, which scares me because i dont want this to become a common thing. if anyone has a pure solution knowing that something helped this issue for them please let me know!:) hopefully with more people putting the question out there, doctors will be able to identify what is causing this feeling to help us fellow people. i cannot live with this feeling forever ahaha

I actually took the time to make an account here simply for the good information everyone posted. I have been terrified thinking this was cancer. I am 34 this is the first time ive really noticed this. I also have the metallic taste on my tongue someone mentioned. I also smoke weed regular and im also suffering with anxiety for lockdown and losing job. also consuming alot of caffeine, coffee with milk so i think i will cut these all down.

I'm sorry you've had to deal with this for so long. i've had the same problem many times and I can tell you with 100% certainty that this is nothing more than a nose hair getting stuck in a curved portion of your soft palate (the roof of your mouth behind the hard part you can reach with your tongue.

Please don't injure yourself by placing any foreign object like a spoon or toothbrush back there. To get it out, rapidly inhale through your nose while making a snorting sound that vibrates the soft palate. It's a sound a bit like imitating a pig. keep doing this until you no longer have the sensation. Once the feeling is gone, you have dislodged the hair and you can spit it out. You might have to make a small vacuum in your mouth and try to suck at the area; then spit out till you see the hair.

I am disappointed that none of my doctor colleagues--even ENT doctors--had the answer.

    Good luck!

So i too have struggled with the same thing and had all the same procedures done....results normal. It drives me nuts!

but the one thing that has worked for me is when the doctor prescibed me steroids. it took it away by the second day. it still comes back periodically.

It might be worth investigating whether any of these posts are related to tonsil stones/tonsilloliths.

I get them and the feeling is definitely of something stuck in or tickling the back of the throat. They're a pain and can cause me to feel really unwell - like having a bad cold or being really run down, throaty, etc. As soon as they're popped out, I feel much better and the sensation goes.

I have no idea why doctors rarely tell patients about these or investigate for them - I spent 30 years going to the doc about sore throats/swollen tonsil/feeling unwell before I found out about tonsil stones in my own research online and discovered that this was indeed the problem. There is plenty of information online about how best to manage them.

    Hope this helps.

Hi nick i recently started to have the same problem mine started just a week ago i havent called the doctors yet because in the UK i find it that they dont really pay attention to things like this they will either tell me to wait for another few weeks or they will tell me to try to home remedies like tea, drinking plenty of water or try water and salt to wash my throat which i think is pointless because its been going on for nearly a week now at the beggining i was cleaning at friends house and he had a cat so i started feeling how this cats hair went in my nose and thats when this feeling of having hair at the back of my throat started now it has gone away but i feel like this hanging bit at the back of my throat is the main problem. im gonna call the doctors in two days as i am working all day tomorrow but i just really need to talk to someone with the same problem as i am worried i hope is nothing serious .... 😦
