I have gad and depression

Posted , 3 users are following.

I was taken off citalopram after many years and put on Zoloft right away.  Took 25 mg for 2 weeks and up it to 50mg a week and half ago.  Not kicking in yet and feeling hopeless.

    Hi Lynda,

Just wanted to give you some moral support and encourage you to hang in there. This particular medication does seem to take several weeks to kick in so it is early days (although I've read some people can feel the benefit much sooner). Do what you can to distract yourself and ride out any nasty side effects (I've had very few side effects since starting on 50mg in January and increasing to 100mg in Feb). Did the citalopram stop working for you?

I can relate to your hopeless feeling as I have been suffering from suicidal depression for 7 months now (and it is a recurrent bout). Each day is hard but if we can find just one good thing to be grateful for, we can build on this and not dwell on the negative thoughts and dreadful physical feelings. Have you got supportive friends and family? Any hobbies that you can get engrossed in? Focussing on others and being positive for their sake can sometimes take your focus off of yourself and give you a sense of compassion & achievement - a sense of self-worth proving you can make a difference, even while you don't feel yourself. I can promise you that you are stronger than you think you are at the moment. You are not alone on your journey and things will improve. Hang in there and let us know how you are getting on.

    Big hug,

    Digsby x

upped my dosage to 75 on Monday.  Feeling a little relief but quite unable to do anything.  Is this usual? Just not interested in socializing.  No joy.

      Hi Lynda,

Well done for hanging in there - it's nice to hear from you again! When was the last time you felt joy in your life? I'm hoping this is just a bit of a dip and that you will recover your mojo soon. Lack of energy - physical, emotional & mental - is a big challenge among those of us who experience anxiety and depression. Everything seems so much effort. Try to find something that you enjoy or that will give you a sense of achievement (even if it is just getting to the shops or writing an email to a friend). This can help over time to make us feel that expending energy is not a waste of effort but does bring some reward. I've got a summer outdoor hobby that i'm pouring all my time and energy into and it forces me to socialise in a friendly, comfortable, non-stressful environment. I definitely still have days when I just need to be on my own and recharge my batterties though. Take one day at a time and don't beat yourself up if you don't feel sociable. What things did you used to like doing?

Please keep in touch and stay strong :-)

      Big hug, Digsby xx

    Hi Lynda,

I'm following this with interest, as like you I changed from citalopram to sertraline, straight away.

I started on 50mg for just over two weeks, and was then increased to 100mg ten days ago. The first week post increase was ok, but the last 3-4 days my mood has really gone downhill. I too feel hopeless sad

Mornings are very tough.  Sleep disturbance.  My thoughts keep flipping from one thing to another.  Not pleasant either.  I feel like my head is going to explode. No appetite. Crying spells.  Not sure if this is what to expect on this medication.  Wary of increasingly dosage.  Does it get better?  Anyone.

Hi Lynda, After insomnia on Sunday night which left me with sky high anxiety yesterday, I slept a lot better last night, and my anxiety is lower today. I am defintiely better than I was, but it has only been two weeks since my increase to 100mg, so the GP wants to give it a little longer to settle in.

I do think I am seeing small improvements!

      Hi Ruth

glad to hear you are seeing some improvement. How was with the increase in dosage.  Did you go from 50 to 100??  It was suggested that I increase to 75 mg.  scared that I will have to go through the same awful side effects again.  Any advice.

      Hi Lynda smile

Apologies for not replying to the previous comment! I did go straight from 50 to 100 yes, and there were side effects - mainly increased anxiety and jitteryness, and it culminated in a night of insomnia but after that one bad night, I had a really good run of a few days!

I've just had a good run of 5 or 6 days where I felt pretty good, not so good the last two days, but from speaking with others on other forums, this can be normal - ie a few good days, a couple of bad, but that the good outweight the bad in time.

      How have you been doing?

      Hi Ruth

am looking forward to a run of good days.  Today I woke up angry that pills were no working. I posted a reply to David so you can go there for more details.  Do you ever get angry or frustrated?

glad things are better for you.  Maybe 100mg is the right amount.

I'm in the same boat. Was on Celexa for years and did quite well on it - fully functional, etc etc. But I noticed in the last few years, I've been having more anxiety in general and panic attacks in more situations. I was switched to Zoloft about three weeks ago and have seen no improvement. I also feel hopeless. I am going to work, trying to not lie in bed all day, but it's really hard. I have no interested in anything and my anxiety is off and on all day. My primary problem is GAD, the panic attacks, then depresion because of the aforementioned.

I keep hoping to see a glimmer of hope, but I haven't yet.
