I have gastroesophageal reflux (GERD) only when I exercise

Nearly a year ago I had gastritis and suffered from acid reflux when I ate certain foods and put in any stressful situation.
Now I have noticed that I have reduced symptoms but my main concern is that I can no longer exercise freely without having reflux. Whenever I start exercising, I'll start to feel uncomfortable in my stomach and I'll start refluxing. I don't throw up or feel intense heart burn, I just have to stop exercising and reflux for a bit before I can move on. I've also noticed that my reflux occurs when I start to think about it in public situations (I could just be sitting down for dinner and then suddenly just feel like refluxing).
My Doctor's have simply told me to just 'walk it off' which I find terribly inconvenient and they won't do anything else for me. Does anyone suffer from GERD only when they exercise and how have you dealt with it so you don't feel it anymore?

We are in the same page. I'm trying to lose weight to prevent Gerd Attack. What triggers my reflux is when I try the bending exercises when you try to reach for your toes.Once I did that , I felt like there were fireworks in my gut.I suddenly stopped because of excruciating pain.I tried diffrent ways of stretching, since then.
Please don't think that I'm not asking you not to continue exercising.Just letting you know that it could happen and it happened to me. But then, your GP knows what's best for you.Hope this helps.

I have experienced similar problems with walking in the morning. I can also start to cough (from acid reflux) when I sit down to watch TV at night about 8.30. So, I've changed to a chair that is more upright and that seems to be helping. Unfortunately I cough with the acid reflux and if it persists I have to take Gaviscon. I was also advised to suck a lolly or chew gum to try and encourage me to keep swallowing because while you're swallowing you can't cough, it is helping. Anyway, you might be lucky and not have a cough.
I have also taken up swimming and I don't seem to have the same problems as when I was walking. Some mornings I can get away with a walk but it really depends on what I ate the day before and whether or not I wake coughing in the morning. I've stopped eating or drinking anything after 5 pm and this is giving me the most relief I've ever had. I now have my main meal at lunchtime, have cut out coffee and limit myself to one cup of tea a day, it is making a difference.
I've had this condition for 4 years now ;( and I have found you have to figure out what makes things worse and make some lifestyle changes. I have adopted more of a raw diet and that also helps a lot.
Hang in there sllim, there are thousands who share your problem. I think you have to learn to manage it and not aggravate it by eating the wrong foods.
All the best

I don't have any specialist medical knowledge, but had a 3 cm Histus Hernia (before surgery for severe GERD) - before when I usted to excerciise, well particularly bending over or crouching, the Hernua would push up in to the chest, I could feel it - just weird sensation and it made reflux worse and left me feeling queasy each time - it only made sense when I was told I had the Hernia and what happens when you have one- often people with GERD have a Hiatal Hernia, also if I take any medications (more so on an empty stomach) I get some symptoms. Hope you get to the bottoming it, all the Best CJ
