I have had a red eye, and reduced vision on and off for 3 months now

Hi,
Im hoping someone out there might have a story that will fill me with hope. I apologise its a long story.
For the past 3 months i have had a red and inflamed eye, 111 said its an infection. I took the antibiotic ointment, and it reduced the inflammation a bit but not completely.
My optician said my left eye vision was really bad, and prescribed me some glasses, i thought maybe this i why my eye is red. The glasses do help, but my eye is still red.
A nurse at the eye clinic then prescribed me steroids as some damage to my cornea was found, that they believe was from a previous viral infection. I used the steroids for a week and my eye was nearly back to normal ! Finally im fixed !
The nurse was happy with my progress and after one week of steroids told me to stop them immediately, as she was very aware of the risks of over using steroids.
That week my eye went back to irritated and red again. I went back to the eye clinic and the doctor believes i was taken off the steroids too early. I restarted them again for 2 weeks this time, and my eye although is less red, its just not back to normal still excessively watering and i only have one day left to take the drops.
I have map and dot dystrophy in both of my eyes, I've only had one flare up in my life about 3 years ago (Only in my left eye ) that lasted about 4 days then my eye were fine again. The past 3 years my eyes have been great i used regular eye drops for lubrication, in hindsight i was unaware i should not use preservative ones for long term use, but the doctors knew which drops i was on and never made a comment on this.
The only thoughts i have had in regards to why my eye seems so inflamed, is that i used to use whitening drops about 5 years ago in that eye as it was red from tiredness. (Or so i thought, I think the drops dried out my eye and the redness was dry eye). All i ever get told is to use lubricating ointments , but they give me headaches and make my eyes really heavy. The fustration is really setting in, as we are allowed to see people again in the UK i don't want people constantly asking what is wrong with my eye !
If anyone has any suggestions, or similar experiences please get in touch I'm getting really desperate for an answer now.
Thank you
B 😃
