I have had a swollen left hand 5 days now. I am limited to what I can do.

The Gout in my left hand started on Saturday and has continued for five days. Fortunately, I have some Naproxen and Omerprazole to take from prevous attacks. I do love chicken and I eat loads of vegetables and fish! I also like a couple of glasses of red wine with my meals in the evening and later, before bed a glass of wisky! I do not think I am overweight at 9st.10lb. I am 72 so I do like to have some comfort in the evenings.  Not too interested in going out after dinner, so relax and do my own thing. I do like driving, but that is out for the moment.

Hello - your diet maybe too rich in purine - found in medium to high quantities in chicken, cod, salmon, trout, tuna, sardines, halibut, all shellfish, asparagus, cauliflower, lentils, kidney beans, string beans, mushrooms, peas and spinach.  If you reduced these foods you could notice a difference in the gout. You are not overweight adn I totally agree with some comfort in the evenings.  All the best.

Red meat and red wine are supposed not to be good for gout. I am reading a book called Eat Right for your Type, which says you should eat for your blood group. Type O are carnivores and should eat meat while type A are herbivores and should eat grain and effectively be vegetarians. There was one blood group that should avoid chicken totally. The book is by an American guy, I think a lot if it should be taken with a pinch if salt however. I have found that changing my diet with PMR has made an amazing difference on the other hand.

What changes have you made in your diet? I feel that I am going backward with my PMR and I have a hunch it maybe what I eat.

If you had a moment or two I would be most interested in your diet changes and any other thoughts. My dear old Dad used to say 'you are what you eat!'

I must admit I have become a real food bore. I looked up on the internet foods that were anti inflammatory, contained calcium and Vitamin D, also potassium and started from there. I have tried to give up simple carbs which really means no sugar although I do have a biscuit with a cup of tea. Maximum one a day. I get biscuits containing nuts, sultanas or chunks of ginger which means the more home made types which makes me feel less guilty! I also eat virtually no bread and only ones full of seeds.  All my friends are being driven mad with my simple and complex carbs. I also have beetroot juice and I have tried acai juice, which made me feel fantastic but I think it was in my imagination really. I eat proper butter and not margarine or low fat items in fact after calorie counting for years I have stopped and eat the fresh foods I like. I have yogurt with manuka honey as well. I buy fresh pineapple for pudding and can now peel and chop one up in less than a minute.  I now go to more than one shop rather than microwaving something from the local supermarket. I must admit my inside must be like a compost heap with my ten or more a day. Pred makes me perpetually hungry so I plan meals in my head rather than rushing to the fridge and grabbing something. It is a whole new world to me. So far in six months of pred I have not put on any weight or developed a chipmunk face, but that may change of course.

I forgot to say I have tried to cut down on salt. As pred pushes up blood pressure salt is bad news. Drinking water means you do tend to wash out some of the sodium which I understand is a good idea. Sodium retention and potassium loss can be a problem so look out for potassium foods, beetroot is supposed to help with blood pressure. My brother is very into it although he does not have PMR but had high blood pressure and has got some amazing beetroot juicing device. It seems to work for him. You can actually buy beetroot juice rather than set up a processing plant like my brother!!!

My doctor told me to eat very pure - foods withou additives (dyes, MSG, etc.).  I think, if you eat sensibly, (I follow Weight Watcher's) and walk a couple miles a day, you will be balancing your life in a way that will help in your healing of the Gout and hopefully the PMR. For now I would not drink any alcohol. Good Luck!

I have found that avoiding meat/ meat broths once a day while having a gout attack helps alot.  Drink a lot of water (8 glasses a day) to help flush your system of the buildup of too much uric acid crystals that settle in joints during these gout attacks. Foods, such as turkey, liver, dried beans, peas, and anchovies have a lot of purine. If you want to avoid medications for gout and to insure that you do not have another attack  Watch your meat intake and always drink  lots of water.

    Hi Davidmelville

I have been busy reading all about Gout and foods not to eat. I will really have to change my eating habbits. Looks like chicken and fish are out for a while as I do love them with loads of vegetables. Perhaps I am eating too many greens! I am not drinking wine or spirits. Just plenty of water and orange juice
