Bit if a long one...last january i started having kidney and flank pain..with repeated infections, the pain only goes when taking nitrofurantoin 100mg daily when i stop taking them the pain returns...while on antibiotics i can still get some pain, which has resulted in me passing a tiny stone, urologist has done a ct scan and found no stones?but a cyst on my left kidney which wouldn't explain the pain in the right?am at a loss what to do...i flushed the stone by accident so couldn't show specialist who i think probably thinks im making this up?i am in severe flank pain at the moment??any advice would be greatly recieved.

I have the same problem to passed kidney stone I think. Doesn't show on ct scan but they found a cyst on the same side. In constant pain with my back do you still urinate a lot?

    Hi Pauline

Well first off  the nitrofurantoin is an antibiotic, not a pain reliever.  So this being an antibiotic would lead me to believe that you have an infection.  Why did you stop taking the antibiotic?  If the infection was not completely gone, then it would start all over again.

What does the urologist tell you about the cyst on the left kidney ?

If you are currently having severe flank pain now, I would go to the emergency room and get checked out.

Also, if you believe that your urologist thinks you are making this up, I would suggest going to see a different

urologist who will take you seriously.  Severe flank pain can be serious and should be examined sooner rather than later.  Best wishes to you.  At this moment for pain, try a heating pad on warm.  Or go the hospital while you are having this flare up and get checked out.

I think you need pain killers. Try taking 2 paracetamol four times a day (4 hr intervals) whether yo are in pain or not. I have started doing this for my kidney stone and I think it is helping. Be aware though that painkillers can make you constipated so watch what you eat plenty of fruit and fibre.

Take care and keep in touch
