I have had diarrhea for several months, also Diverticulitis and Lactose Intolerance. HELP

I have gone thru 2 attacks of Diverticulitis in the past year, treated with 10 days Cipro and Flagyl, all liquid diet and then  BRAT diet and light solids. I am traveling overseas until October, and do not want to go to a foreign GI specialist for a colonoscopy. All my blood and stool tests were fine after the last Diverticulitis bout 3 months ago, before I started travel. . But I have constant diarrhea, and lost 20--25 lbs, otherwise fine. I am so stressed and afraid of sudden diarrhea attacks I don't know what to eat anymore, so I eat very little. Trial and error food at this point. No red meat, raw fruit or veggies (I could kill for a salad), no alcohol, no dairy products, no eggs, no lactose-free yogurt even, boiled potatoes and grilled fish mostly, but in small quantities. I am so afraid to even go out that I have started smoking unfortunately. Diet coke seems to be ok but maybe not, I am desperate. But need to wait until October to see a GI specialist when back in the US?

PLEASE HELP!

White instant rice is a binder according to my doctor. Sugar and pop increase any diarrhea.

    Good luck.

I am very sorry you are having this problem.  I think you need to get a strong at least 20 billion probiotic.  Maybe there is a drugstore there where you can get help with a good brand.  Also i suggest no more diet coke.  I love diet coke too and have not had one since February.  It is very harsh on the stomach and colon to drink carbonated drinks.  I think you are wise to avoid fresh fruits and salads.  Cooked carrots should be okay and potatoes without the skin.  I suggest you do see a doctor.  You don't have to do a lot of tests but you need some answers with the diarrhea attacks.  Also google information on IBS.  That comes with diverticulits many times.

Is your water source good?   Drink only bottled water if you are traveling.

But loosing that much weight and not eating much with have a toll on your body nutritionally and other problems with develop.   I do not think you need to wait until October to be seen by a doctor.  I will pray you will have wisdom and have the right place to go for help.

You are under a lot of stress and I know you feel desperate. It is hard enough having this at home but to be traveling is an extra load of stress.  Please see a medical professional of some kind and get some professional help and it will help I am sure.

Blessings to you and I am going to pray for you right now.

I found that drinking diet Coke was as good as taking a laxative, so I stopped.  I stick to lactose-free, gluten-free, no foods that produce gas, no red meat or pork.  I eat fish and chicken.  In other posts, there are guides on what to avoid, and what is safe to eat.  I find that smaller meals are less aggravating.  Hopefully you can find foods that don't bother you.

Immodiam only a short term relief and after you stop comes back diarrhoea with a vengence I take Questran powder sachets bulking fibre to stop diarrhoea put back on this by my consultant. Obs you cannot take if you have a flare up or not been diagnosed with a problem. Like derverticulitus and other stomach problems. Questran is my life saver . Stops flare ups if you have derverticulitus. Look at it this way you have aprox 22 feet of intestine and. some pockets where pouches where small things can get stuck in causing. flare ups. So Questran pushes these things through the dirrhoea is the flare up food stuck in the pouches that cant get out such as seeds and all the things you should not be eating avoiding. with derverticulitus desease

Hi I havechad same problem and now refered back to my consultant and back on Questran sachets started back on 6 a day but now taking 3 a day Questran is powder sachets a sort of fibre bulking powder that can be mixed with water apple juice or milk This us my life saver as stopps the diarrhoea. as bulks up your faeces. I can actually get my life back by not worrying in having horrific accidents in my daily life as in going out which have been not only embarrassing but have driven me to disspair . Silly me stopped the Auestran last August as was 80% fine. After months of diarrhoea. My doctors surgery was useless and when had flare ups didnt even give me any antibiotics. I had black stools and inflimation my bowel and wasnt even told grr calprotection showed inflimation possible colitus. Yes also I was eating all the right goods and avoiding. drinks like coffee or to much tea which is a laxitive..  Coffee worst instantly in the loo . Please ask your doctor for Questran or your consultant . Seems your not getting any help or being put on any antibiotic help for flare ups like I was . Im 73 years old and use to be a nursing assistant my care has been abismal my docs so changing surgery. Almost like they dont care stomach problems because not visable which can just be as disabling as having constant toothache.  Of course you can have your  teeth pulled out but not your stomach .  Get well soon. Quit carbonated beverages! Water worked best for me. Eat 1/2 of what you would normally. Eat plain foods, no spicy foods. Smoking increases bowel function also. Take a probiotic that is lactose free check the label!
