I have had water diarrhoea for 4 days now

I was diagnosed with ulcerative colitis just over a year ago after a colonoscopy requested because of rectal bleeding. Everything calmed down and I haven't been bothered since until Monday past when I developed diarrhoea. I thought perhaps it was just a bug and it was only two days in that the penny dropped and I realised it may be a flare up.

I'm in a bit of pain which seems to be in my upper abdomen. There has been no bleeding this time. I feel bloated all of the time and eating has become a nightmare. I've been trying to eat small amounts of bland food, but it immediately causes discomfort and, not too long after, yet another visit to the loo. I am going to the loo upwards of 15 times a day and it now really just looks like bile that is coming out.

Does anyone one have any advice or even reassurance that this is how flare ups can go?

Any comment would be greatly appreciated.

    Hi Lesley

Can you tell me what type of food you take on daily basis? Do you take bread, spicy food, alcohol, etc?

      Cheers

    Hi Ehsan

i am vegan, so eat mainly fruit and veg and pulses, couscous etc. I do drink alcohol socially, but not daily. Of course, with this flare up, I've cut back on the high fibre, but really don't have much of an appetite anyway, probably because of the reaction my body's having at the moment. I usually drink a lot of diet soda (I know how awful it is) but have stopped since this started and intend to keep it that way. I've been trying to drink a lot of water. I do like bread and some spicy food. I've gone from multigrain bread to plain white bread since this started as a way of reducing fibre

      Hi

I had sever bleeding with some diarrhoea for one and half year. After trying several suplphur based medications, which ended up with sever skin rashes, I decided on food ellimination process, which worked. I stopped bread, any grain based food, substitued with rice based food. After 3-4 week bleeding stopped, inflammation (which also affected prostate) stopped. Back to normal now. However, I do take occasional grain/wheat based food but I can then feel the symptoms starting to come back.

This was my own diagnosis, which may / may not work for others.

        Cheers

Thanks for your input, Ehsan. I eat pretty much the same diet all the time, so suspect that it's not necessarily diet induced as I haven't been bothered at all for over a year. I'll see what the doc says, hopefully tomorrow.

Grain based foods?? I've stopped all spicy food and cut down dramatically in alcohol intake and rubbish snacks I now drink more water and bottled rather then tap I recently made up a bone broth as I heard gelatin is really good for digestion, waiting on my highly strength fish capsules and now instead of drinking wine in the evening I drink hot fresh ginger lemon honey tea. Because I'm still on Steriods everything is fine but the test will be in January when I'm weaned off them and that's what I'm very anxious about so trying to get to grips with best diet before this happens

Definitely worth a call to your consultant or doctor because your losing alot of vital nutrients and when I left it 2 weeks before seeking help due to being new to the condition and not knowing what a colitis flare up was I ended up admitted to hospital for 10days don't wait till symptoms get worse I.e being sick after eating or drinking water severe cramps and bleeding,

Hope it eases off what mediation are you on??

I am not on any medication. I was given suppositories after the initial diagnosis and was supposed to use them for a month, but only managed about a week. I couldn't possibly use them now with this explosive, watery diarrhoea 😞

I was the same I was diagnosed with proctitus last year couldn't do suppositories or the oral tables asacol as made me feel like I had permanent all day morning sickness so just stopped taking it all then had 2 bad flare ups within 6mths months of bleeding and toilet trips it was tolerable, it's when the sickness and cramps high temp back pain started is when I got concerned as I couldn't work out if I had the flu or a proctitus or IBS flare up.

so I left it I did visit doctors crippled up in pain 3 times but they just put it down to IBS which they all guessed I must now have so I took IBS relief tablets and didn't help remove the pain so again made me a tad bit concerned, like you I love spicy food bread cheese red wine chocolate and just kept on eating like normal till everything I tired to eat I threw up. After being in hospital November this year I was diagnosed with colitis and now on medication.

From the sounds of it your in a middle of a flare up go to gp and ask for Steriods will calm it all down till U get a consultant appointment to discuss new medication other then suppositories cause if you leave it you will gradually get very sick and can be very dangerous as I was told a million times by everyone for leaving it so long

Thanks for your input, Samantha. I hope that with the holidays, my GP is around. Will try him tomorrow. I'm in South Africa, so doesn't work quite like the NHS

Sorry, I was refering to wheat based grain not others. I know with genetically modified grains these days, we could be eating anything out of ordinary.

    Cheers
