I have intense inner ear pain at night. What is this???

For as long as I can remember, several times a month I will wake with intense, stabbing ear pain. It is so bad that i cannot even move my head. I have to use my hands to very slowly turn my head. This happens in both ears. I'm a side sleeper. the pain starts in the ear on the side that i am sleeping on. When I am able to turn my head with my hands and switch sides I will go back to sleep, but the pain will move to that ear and i will wake up again. After a night of this, the pain remains throughout the day and slowly subsides. I can go a few nights or a few weeks without it happening. It's been at least 3 times a month for as long as I can remember fir 36 years. I have never been able to find a diagnosis. There is no remedy that works. The pain is so intense. Has anyone else experienced this or know what is going on? I'd love some direction!

Do you have TMJ ? Tooth grinding can cause terrible ear pain....also a tight neck can cause ear pain ! I have both and often have an earache. When I go into an ENT, they can't find anything, so it is muscular.

    Hope this helps !

I don't have TMJ. This was my first thought. No problems with my neck either. I appreciate your thoughts.

I get ear pain which can be really bad from dermatitis. When I run out of earspray and it flares up I cannot sleep on my side. Do you get dermatitis or eczema anywhere else like on you scalp? Does it feel like your ear is inflamed?
