i have only 4 pints a week , but i fell ill for 5 days after it.

i'm 45 years old.  i have been taking about 4 pints per week for about 8 years , before that i was an average drinker and never reallly drank that much more . i could handle it better the hangovers without any bother,  i have always been in good health apart from being over weight . i never went to the doctors for anything and i have never been in hospital except once 3 years ago for a colonoscopy. about less than one year now i have noticed that after my 4 pints of a friday it took me longer to get over it. now it takes me almost 5 days to get back to being ok. during this time i feel and act like a spastic ( excuse my wording ) i have saliva drooling down one side of my mouth , if someone spoke to me over these days i cant string a sentence together , i become mongofied as it were, i cant speak properly, i sleep about 80% of the 5 days. my eating is all over the place  i stare into space , i never leave the house due to feeling incapable.  i have very deep and disturbing images and dreams , i wake up quick with heart burn. in some cases i forget where i am only for about 2 seconds. i dont smoke during these 5 days or so. my face takes a strange shape and i tend to blurr my speech and i can't think normal or act out normal day to day activities. however after im ok i can act as if i were a president of a company or a boss of a workplace , i am articulate, kind, smart, creative person , i go walking , go to my bowling club , interact appropriatly and can conduct myself in any situation. i am not working at the moment , im finding it very hard to get back into work after 8 years or so unemployed. i have applied to thousands of places but i have no luck. i do not take drugs, i have a 100% clean police record, i don't abuse alchahol , i am a quiet reserved pesron.

thanks for reading,

joseph mcdonald.

    Hi Joseph

Does this only happen when you drink alcohol??

There could well be something more going on with your body.

Are you on any medication that could be possibly interacting with the alcohol.

I think the best thing is to see your GP and discuss it with him or her. It would be well worth getting some tests to rule out other reasons. Like an ECG diabetes etc

I sense your moods are low at the minute due to not being employed have you considered any voluntary work which could help you get your foot on the ladder.

You say you don't feel like going out much during these times.

It may be an idea to record this when it happens to and give it to your GP. It could give him a better picture of what a happening with you.

I hope that you will find employment soon as it does seem to be discouraging you.

What did you do for a living before have you thought about a career I am a student now and I am 44.

I hope things improve for you and things start to look up.

    Take care

      Dear sharon,

Thank you very much for replying to my story, yes this only happens after i have had my normal 4 pints of lager on a fri, and it started about less than a year ago. i have been taking 4 pints per week for about 7 / 8 years now. the only other medication i am on is heartburn liquid peptac, i have been for a colonoscopy andmy intestines are clear, i have had a full check up for diabetes which came back negative, i have had a full stool sample just there last week and it's negative. also a while back i had to see the psychiatrist for mental health issues about 3 years ago becasue i was feeling very low and after 6 months of sessionshe said i was fit and healthy mentally. with all this aside i think it may be something in the alchahol now or that im getting old and my body is rejecting it. basically i am healthy and a tad overweight , i am not on medication other than peptac for heartburn. it is scary when i cannot function phyisically or mentally the next 4 or 5 days, very frightening, but when i decided to go off the alcahol for 7 weeks to see what would happen, it turned out that i was 100 percent with no problems, to be honest i think that i have or my body had had enough of alcahol. i have rang the doctor whilst wring this message to you , and i have an appointment 24th wed. ,thanks for your reply, i will let you know how things go with the doctor.

      your sicerely,

oh P.S, you mentioned what i done for a living , yes i was a carer in different nursing homes and elderly centres, for about 25 years, i used to do 12 hour shifts 5 days a week feeling confident and nothing bothered me , i never ever once went to the doctors then,  then i went into dental nursing training 2008, i passed all my course work but becasue i was a guy no dentist would would hire me and after a few years went by i forgot all the theory and stuff so that's when i got a bit depressed and have not worked since.

      Hi Joseph

I did sense you were feeling low and I think it's discouraging when you have applied for so many jobs and nothing comes up.

Don't give up hope though would you consider doing a CV and leaving it in dentists in your area a friend of mine got a job even though it wasn't advertised.

Would you consider nursing homes again perhaps for a short time.

Even just voluntary work that would be of interest it's a step and good to get you out of the house and give you a sense if purpose.

It does seem from what you say it's the alcohol that is causing these symptoms is it alcohol in general or just beers.

Glad to hear the colonoscopy was clear not a very pleasant procedure.

Is there a history of any heart problems within the family. It certainly is puzzling that this lasts for days after you have only had a few pints.

Is it possible to try two pints to see if the symptoms decrease.

      Dear sharon,

Yes for a while i have been down, i stay myself and have done for over 20 years, i don't have any kids nor have a ever married, i don't have a partner. i prefer this way of life. i can't have anyone stay with me as it can upset my routine i'm just used to it. but don't thik that i'm a recluse or anything oh no far from it,, i have friends and family out with my home. i speak to other friends on skype everyday, i go to my bowling club and partake in meetings and tournaments. i talk to people no problem, but when i'm at home the door is locked and i prefer that , i don't like anyone in my house, bit weird but there ye go.  i will not give up hope thanks for that i shall keep going, and regards to volounteer work i found out that it's alot harder to get into than paid work, and i have been rejected a few times from non paid work. i don't touch spirits, only lager, the medical history in my family is diabetis and divericulitus, and those have been negative for me. if the problem happens again after 4 pints , i would just stop drinking , i done 7 weeks there without alcahol and everyday i felt great,  i will see how it goes after this fri when i go to the pub. then if it happens again i will know it's the alcahol. then i have my docs appointment on 24th and see what she say's.  thanks again .

      yours sincerely,
