I honestly have no idea what to do. Desperate and scared.

Hi..

I am quite scared and I just need to reach out to people. I have no idea what I have at all. Is it a virus or something? I don't know.

Okay.. So, on the 11th of march, I started having tooth and jaw pain. I panicked so I called my dentist's emergency number. He told me he could see me in the morning. In the mean time, I was told to take ibuprofen for the pain. I got through the night and I saw him the next morning.

He looked at my tooth. He told me it really didn't look like it was infected, but there was a space from the x-rays where it looked like bacteria could be collecting. He put me on amoxicillin for 10 days. I did fine, but then the pain came back a few days after I finished my antibiotic.

He then put me on clindamycin. This is where everything just went downhill for me. 3 pills into taking that medicine, I started having such bad nausea along with chills and feeling like heat was radiating off my body. Very bad headaches too. We went to the ER. After waiting for a long time, I finally got in to speak to a doctor. The doctor told me that he would put me back on amoxicillin since it seemed I wasn't having a good reaction to the medicine.

So, I went home and rested. I took my first dose the next day. Symptoms weren't getting better at all. Still feeling the nausea, the chills, heat radiating off my body.  No more headaches though. I truly feel this was a mixture of the tooth pain and not having caffeine for 3 days.

I saw my dentist two days later. After running x-rays and doing a cold sensitivity test, I don't even have an infection. Ugh. It's just clenching my teeth. Then to make things even more of a nightmare, my face started itching that day and lips swelled. I called the dentist's office the next day. They told me you're having an allergic reaction to the amoxicillin. So, go ahead and go off the amoxicllin and take bendadryl for the allergies. Mind you, I was only continuing to take it for the fact that  my body wouldn't build up a resistance to the antibiotic.

Well, since I've been off the antibiotic, things have gotten a bit better, but not exactly completely. I have little to no appetite. I am usually around 126-130 pounds. I'm down now to 123. I've been having soft stool I've noticed ever since I stopped the amoxicillin. It has the strangest smell. It's not like a foul odor, but it's almost sweet. Like a weird, sweet smell. I don't know what this is from. Maybe it's the fact that I can only tolerate fruit and veggies lately. So, I have been taking in a lot of this and it's showing up with the smell of my poop? I have no idea. I've had nausea on and off and a grumbling stomach. I've been getting fatigue too. Also, I have a low grade fever like every single day. My face gets flush and hot. My temperature will start out normal in the day(98.4-98.6).

I went to the ER again last night because I wanted to make sure it wasn't my gallbladder giving me issues. I'm supposed to set up an appointment for gallbladder surgery this month. I called my surgeon about it too who is supposed to do the surgery and she suggested I do it. They ran blood tests and did an ultrasound of my abdominal area. I was also on IV fluids due to dehydration. I have barely eaten or drank anything. Blood results normal along with ultrasound results. The doctor believes it's a virus that's causing all these issues, but I can't help but worry it's something worse.

I have to force myself to eat or drink and I keep reading all these things that give me such anxiety such as C diff. This is an intestinal infection I guess that results from taking antibiotics. I kept asking the doctors about this. They told me it's rare to have this unless you are someone who takes antibiotics for a very long time. I can't help but think I have it though because none of my symptoms are really letting up. The anxiety for my health is just driving me crazy.

Does this sound like a virus or like a result of being on antibiotics? It's been going on for like 7 days now. I start class on Monday and I am getting so paranoid. I am scared of like fainting in class as a result of not eating or drinking much.

    Hi Rachlexis,

It sounds like you have an insanely sensitive teeth. I know I can have some odd reactions to antibiotics (usually a very upset stomach) but I think you are just having some adverse side effects to them.

On the eating front though I would suggest making blended drinks (stuff like bananas, nuts, spinach, orange juice, honey, yogurt - all blended together to get a mix of vitamins) then use a straw to bypass your teeth altogether (for the time being) at least that way you are getting to eat without the pain.

The smell will be from the Antibiotic passing through your system, it also seems you have bad reactions from the two Antibiotics you have been taking, although it now sounds your infection has cleared and you can forget about that

Viral infections are complex sometimes, antibiotics will not work with this problem. In the Winter/Spring viruses are very common and like a cold will eventually clear, you need to give time for it to clear.

Cdiff is not something for you to consider you have not been assessed for time in hospital and have not been tested for it. It is only a problem if you need time in hospital as a day patient for Surgery in hospital or sedation in a Dental Department. I seem to go through these tests most times when I am having surgery.

To put your mind at rest your GP may be willing to take a swab

It really sounds like a reaction to one of the antibiotics and loose stools are a common side effect which will improve fairly quickly. If you are allergic to one of the antibiotics it can take some time for the symptoms to go away, nausea and a low grade temperature are common symptoms .

I'm allergic to tetracycline's and the last time I took them (many years ago) it took several weeks to get over it, but you should see the worst symptoms reduce fairly quickly. Just make sure you drink plenty of fluids, remember small amounts of the drugs stay in your system for several days.
