I know its was amlodipine!

I am a healthy 58 yr old and normally very active. BP was rising over the last year or so to 178/98 and so this Jan my Doc put me on Amlodipine 5mg. Thats when it started. Firstly with a loss of energy, then total loss of stamina, I felt like a Zombie all the time. As the month progressed I started to get forgetful, dizzy spells, very tingly left hand and painful joints all througfh my left side. BP did not drop as fast as hoped so Doc added Lisinopril 2.5mg. Hey... off with the faries now! After two weeks I could not concentrate on anything people were telling me and to the point that I was becoming detached from the real world. And that was only after a couple of weeks on the cocktail. I decided to trial which drug was causing this and first removed the Lisinopril for a few days then swapped over to stopping Amlodipine. Cor.. what a difference. Almost the next day after stopping Amlodipine I started to recover. After just one week people at work are now saying 'welcome back' and I know what they mean. BP not down yet but I am never going near Amlodipine again, its a wrecker!

Has anyone else had anything like my reaction?

I have just found this whilst looking for a reason for my joints hurting (left side) I had the puffy legs from knee down and saw the Doc who told me to wear flight socks and that it was a side effect of the Amlodipine. What I didn't realise that, I have been depressed (put that down to the winter and bad stuff happening) aching (put that down to working in the garden), tiredness (put that down to the depression) shaking (not sure what that was about) loss of memory (early onset alzheimer's - well thats what the OH thought) Weight gain (nothing changed in diet- so just middle aged spread) I'm 47 used to be quite fit and active, now feel like a zombie, tomorrow I will not be taking my Amlodipine 5mg and will see how I feel. I cannot believe one little tablet can make me feel so bad, I've just lost 6 months of my life . I've read this article and it's just like reading my diary. So grateful my finger hurt, so I found out what's happening - maybe now I can get on with living. Will ring Doc on Monday tho and see if there is an alternative. Thank you to everyone for posting here - more people need to realise the side effects of tablets the Doctor gives you.

Hi ivan_rtw, the last tablet I took was on Saturday, on Monday I had more energy and a whole more positive outlook on life. Still tired and slightly hazy vision. Today (Thursday) my BP is 134/94 which is higher than it should be, I am cutting out as much salt as possible, and am off to the pool for a swim this afternoon, I haven't wanted to go for the last 6 months or so, my weight seems to be dropping very slightly also, I just feel healthier than I have in ages. With regards to taking it off the market, my OH is on it 10mg and has no side effects whatsoever. So I just think we should be more aware of side effects that can happen and maybe be quizzed alot more at checkups about how we are, as I really didn't put all the different things together and work out it was down to the tablets, until seeing this site. Seeing GP in just over a week and hopefully he will agree with me - Good luck Ivan.

Hi Kikky - yes, my hubby is fine on Amlodipine too, as is a friend.  Hubby developed swollen ankles when they increased his dose from 5 to 10mgs so the GP reduced the dose back down to 5 and added in a small dose of Ramipril, and has no swelling at these doses.  Apparently, the latest thinking is to put patients with raised BP on 2 or 3 medicines to achieve optimum BP all at low doses in preference to a single medicine at a higher dose.  I suffered severe ankle swelling even at the 5mg dose (but then I'm seemingly sensitive to so many of them!).  But if Amlodipine works for some then we can't discount it - still odd though that it appears to be the one most complained about on here.......I wonder if that's because it is the one most widely prescribed at present?  It was interesting reading about your weight dropping slightly.  On the latest pills I'm on I'm noticing that my weight has suddenly started increasing - I suspect the pills are causing fluid retention.  I'm now trying to go without as many carbs as I can such as bread and potatoes, and completely avoiding anything with sugar for a few days to see if it makes a difference.  I do hope you continue to feel better off the Amlodipine and that your GP can offer something to reduce your diastolic reading.

I'm so glad I found this site- I have been on Amlodipine for ony 3 weeks and have in the last few days been getting major side effects, I'm 50yo, just had a check up, had high bp although I am relatively fit for my age . Was prescribed 2.5 the 5.0 per day. then it began, swollen painfull legs and ankles, tremors, flushes, poor thought process' , rashes, . I'm now tapering off till I can get to see my gp, I just feel terrible. Poor sleep too. When I walked in my docs altough i had high bp I felt fine (as you do with the hypertension anyway) now I still have high bp but have all these terrible symptoms . Worst thing I have done in a long time, Now I have to get it sorted or go on another med.  Any help from people here would be appreaciated,

Good luck with your recovery. I was only on them a few weeks and had really big problems had to stop working on second week as I couldn't function. My head felt clearer the day after I stopped. Most of the other side effects gone. Still suffer with my memory and tiredness. Get aches and pains walking about, but I think that is my body settling in after a long period of inactivity. 5 weeks sleeping most of the time and too exhausted to do anything else.

I am trying to build my fitness back up.

All the best to you. I hope your doctor finds a tablet more suitable for you.

    Hi Nigel,

I'm on Benicar 20mg and Amlodipine 5mg and have been having some loss of equilibrium, which is important when playing racquetball.  My blood pressure is 142/83 in the morning right before I take my meds, but drops to 116/62 in the evening, so the combination is doing what it is supposed to do.  My doctor took me off of Lisinipril because it actually caused my BP to INCREASE.  Be aware that Lisinipril is made from snake venom.  SNAKE VENOM!!!  If your BP isn't responding to the meds, Lisinipril is the probable culprit.  Ask your doctor if you can go on Benicar 20 mg and cut the Amlodipine in half (2 1/2 mg).

I was admitted to the local hospital 12 months since with respiratory pneumonia, following treatment I was placed in a rehab ward, while in there all my previous medications, for high BP etc were stopped until I was discharged when I was prescribed Amlodipine and Clopidogrel. I attributed the lack of use  my legs down to the fact I had been kept in bed for 8 weeks to overcome the very low BP found during my first session with the physioterrorists when it went through my boots. Up to goining into hospital I had been on various BP tablets. Since then I have continued on AM and now can hardly walk and attributed it to after effects from my stroke. Today I found this forum and will now try to stop AM and will talk to my GP, she is very aware that I wish  to become more active and is willing to listen to me as she did when I weaned myself off Simvastatin following a stroke five years ago.

I have found this forum very eye opening. Will update in a couple of weeks

Malcolm, I've interested as to why you have weaned yourself of Simvastatin as it was prescribed following stroke.  My son was prescribed Clopidogrel and simvastin following a stroke as routine treatment, even though he'd never had particuarly high cholesterol.  His cholesterol is now extremely low but I believe the treatment is now for life.

Hi Nigel, I was given Amlodipine but  my  right leg  became so swollen I couldnt walk. I had a stroke four years ago  and I walk with a really bad limp and my left leg has to all the hard stuff, like walking! My right leg became so heavy after Id taken Amlodipine  so I stopped taking it and went back to my doctor. She prescribed me Lercanidipine four days ago. It is like my body has been take over by an alien! Im so tired all of the time, my leg has started to swell again and my face is constantly flushed. So tomorrow I wont be taking the drug. I just want to feel back to my normal self.

Many Moons ago I was told I had High Blood pressure it worried me. The Doctor told me a needed to take some of the different drugs which have appeared on this post, which I help start again many moons ago. But then I asked myself "is everyone born with the same body". Of course we are not, but when we abuse the body we can make things worse.

So I stopped taking any Drugs given to me by the Doctor, I then started to try and get my weight down and become fitter. So now at 76yrs and a few lbs over 14stone, and going to the Gym twice a week for a good work out, I feel 10 times better, my Blood pressure varies but can drop to 140/80 or there abouts depending on what I am doing, it's a simple matter of taking yourself in hand and getting healthy. It worked for me.

Is this the post with Mrs. O? I am not sure where I was before. My mother has been on amlodipine for a year now for High Blood Pressure (along with an ace inhibitor and a diuretic). Now her nephrlologist has told her to stop taking it because I was concerned her BP was too LOW. Is it safe to just stop it suddenly? She is 80 years old. Thank you.

      Hi Susan

I was on Amlodipine for several months and did just stop it with no noticeable side effects, just a terrific relief in feeling the ankle swelling subside and my legs return to normal!  However, a pharmacist once told me that when we come off any drug, we should taper it slowly over about a week or so for each year that we have been on it.

I'm not a medic but, as your Mum will still be taking other meds for her BP, I think it's unlikely that she will have any problems just stopping the Amlodipine.

As you mention it is a nephrologist who has advised your Mum to stop taking Amlodipine, I am wondering if she also has reduced kidney function - I am under a renal consultant due to reduced kidney function and it is he who is trying to control my high BP.

I came off "cold turkey" and started feeling better the next day.

Head started to clear up in about 3 days.

This stuff is poison.  Treat it as such.

Hitch, thank you and I'm pleased to hear that you feel better since coming off Amlodipine, but it isn't very helpful for those in need of medication to read such statements as "This stuff is poison".

Although, we are hearing of many adverse reactions to this drug I know of many people who are taking it without any problems.  The point I'm really trying to make is that those of us who suffer from high blood pressure, do need treatment if natural methods don't work - yes some drugs do cause some of us very unwanted side efects but not all, and many of us have no choice but to find something that suits or face the risk of organ damage and worse.

Mrs. O, I agree with you on this. My mother has been on diazapam (low dose valium) for years for irritable bowel. It has worked wonderfully for her, and I also took it in the past during my menstrual cycle. My friends Dad was put on it and became violent and disoriented and it took days to resolve. He insisted Valium should be banned completely! By the same token, my father was given Xanax in hospital by a nurse who wanted to quiet him because he was asking for a breathing treatment for his COPD. My father suffered permament memory loss and was never the same again. But I know other people can take it okay. You never know what is poison to one person and what is a lifesaver.

Yes my mother lost one kidney to renal artery stenosis years ago, so she has the one functioning kidney and with upping the BP meds the function of that has gone down. Her creatinine went to 2.0 but has evened out between 1.8 and 1.9. Frankly she has been off the amlodipine for 5 days now and doesn't feel any better. I was hoping she would improve. sad

Snap!  I also had a kidney removed aged 12 (13th birthday in hospital!).  My creatinine seems to be measured differently to your Mum's (I'm in the UK).  I've never had raised Creatinine in the past but my levels went above normal to 112 when I first started Losartan but at the last test some 6 weeks ago it had reduced to 101 so only very slightly above normal.  My eGFR (estimated Glomerular Filtration Rate) kidney function test also worsened to 42 but crept up to 47 at the last test, so still within CKD3 (Chronic Kidney Disease Stage 3).  Do you know what your Mum's eGFR is?

Your Mum and I are probably more susceptible to suffering from raised blood pressure due to having only one kidney, but my consultant is emphasising the importance of keeping BP low in order to protect the kidney long term - really find it difficult getting my head around the fact that  the BP treatment then causes a deterioration in the kidney function in order to protect it long-term.

I'm sorry that your Mum isn't feeling any better yet but 5 days may not be long enough to improvement - it took several weeks for my ankle swelling to go down after discontinuing Amlodipine.  I hope she feels better soon.  Lovely that your Mum has such a caring daughter.smile

Hi Susan I agree with one of the other respondors, it will take longer than 5 days to notice improvement.  It took about 2 weeks for me to notice that it was the amlodipine.  Hang in there.
