I know its was amlodipine!

I am a healthy 58 yr old and normally very active. BP was rising over the last year or so to 178/98 and so this Jan my Doc put me on Amlodipine 5mg. Thats when it started. Firstly with a loss of energy, then total loss of stamina, I felt like a Zombie all the time. As the month progressed I started to get forgetful, dizzy spells, very tingly left hand and painful joints all througfh my left side. BP did not drop as fast as hoped so Doc added Lisinopril 2.5mg. Hey... off with the faries now! After two weeks I could not concentrate on anything people were telling me and to the point that I was becoming detached from the real world. And that was only after a couple of weeks on the cocktail. I decided to trial which drug was causing this and first removed the Lisinopril for a few days then swapped over to stopping Amlodipine. Cor.. what a difference. Almost the next day after stopping Amlodipine I started to recover. After just one week people at work are now saying 'welcome back' and I know what they mean. BP not down yet but I am never going near Amlodipine again, its a wrecker!

Has anyone else had anything like my reaction?

Hi Waymie, when I took Ramipril I thought I had found the perfect solution, but as I posted within 3 months my joints started to become really sore. So I went on line and that’s where I discovered that this tablet can cause joint problems. It did lower my Blood pressure but I had to stop. It was only after checking with the Doctor she put me on Amiodipine and that was a total disaster.

Hi I am a 58 year old female. I started taking Amlodipine three months ago and effects gradually crept up on me - but they were horrendous . It was my partner who was concerned and kept asking me if I was Ok. poor man I seemed to be undergoing a combination of PMT and the menpause rolled into one. The rest of the time I was in La La land - it was only the other day when I drove through a red light and then thought "Oh I've just driven through a red light - never mind" - that I realised I needed to get off those tablets. Reading other peoples experiences has helped a lot - thought I just had dementia but was too zonked out to care. I only stopped my tablets yesterday on the advice of my GP. Already I feel better - like I'm waiting up.

Hi Puffpixie I hope that you are feeling a bit more like your self now that you have stopped the Amlodipine. It is a teribble drug and again I say it should be banned. I am fine now on Losartin how ever I do feel a bit lethargic an hour after taking it but the tiredness wears off after a while. I am back in work and my BP is now much better. I felt as though I was on a different planet when I was on the Amlodipine and when I tried to walk into our local town which I have done without problems for almost all my life, I was so unsteady on my feet that I was lucky not to have fallen over. Amlodipine made me feel so ill I thought that I was going to die at one point and like yourself my family became very concerned. I was unable function around the house and work was out of the question. How could I calculate drug doses when I didn't even know my own name. I have never felt so scared in my life and knew that the drug was having a terrible effect on me. Still at least after four attempts my GP listened and took me off it and I have got my life back. I hope that things continue to improve for you and that your BP gets controlled by medication that will not affect your quality of life.

    Take care

Back from a lovely 2 week break, unfortunately BP has not improved,I am be coming quite concerned when other people are posting their "high" readings as mine is averaging at 220/135.Having looked online at some bp charts and realising that some of them do not go that high I am worried as I have also read that my readings are at a fatal level!Tried to get appt at my useless surgery but told they have none for 2 weeks!Just waiting for a call back to get an emergency app as Ikeep getting all dizzy and confused and also blacking out so need to find out whats going on,hope you guys are all feeling better now and back in the normal world rather than on planet amlodopine!

Hi Phoebe I am so glad that you have had a lovely break. I read about your concerns about your BP readings and yes they are a bit high. What I suggest since you are experiencing dizzy spells and confussion, is that you take yourself into your A&E department rather than wait for your GP to see you. They can monitor you and give you something to bring down your BP, then your GP can keep an eye on you in the community. I will be honest, your BP is high and you need to be seen, but please tell them that you cannot take Amolodopine and they will probably try something else. Please let me know how you get on because if I was experiencing the symptoms that you are having then I would get advise. It may be because you have been away in the heat, and have flown, but you still need to be seen. Take care and please keep in touch .

Hey guys! I know how a lot of you feel though the amlodipine did an extra little number on me. The amlodipine actually increased my blood pressure and pulse. My blood pressure was, at it's worst, 213/115! And episodes of my heart racing knocked me down for the count with it spiking to 130bpm just resting! I begged my docs to get me off it and they increased it which increased the effects. Eventually, I demanded to be back on my old meds which worked fine (the beta blocker atenolol) and now I am finally able to ween myself off the amlodipine. What a horrible experience and I am never going back!

I think I'm having the same problem my bp was on avg. 140/85 to 150/90 but after taking one pill it's shot up to 146/98 . Also my eyes turned yellow. I've already called my doctor and stopped the pill but it will be 3 weeks before I can start something new . The diuretics they tried didn't work either. I may just have to go on a very restrictive diet. I'm fed up with pils.

I am glad I came across these comments regarding Amlodipine. My doctor prescribed a 10 mg dose three weeks ago. The past week or so I noticed I felt tired and unusually lethargic and was waking up all night long. The last three nights have been virtually sleepless.Started to lose interest in doing anything the past few days. I decided to checkout side effects for this pill and fortunately arrived at this website. I will cease taking any nore of these tabs. Seeing my doctor tomorrow and will tell him to prescribe something else...hopefully something that wont wreck my health further.

Hi every one I am back. I forgot my password and had difficulty getting back onto the forum, but thanks to the very kind people on the help line, I have managed to get back in for a chat. I am sorry to read how many people are being affected by BP tablets how ever Amlodipine seems to be one of the worst for side effects . I am on Losartin Potassium and even though I feel rather lethagic an hour after taking it,, I am much better since I stopped the Amlodipine. I have also made sure that I get regular blood checks to watch my Potassium levels are safe and so far all is looking good also my BP is down to 120/76 which is brilliant. I could not have stayed on the Amlodipine and realise now how ill it was making me feel. I have also spoken to a few friends who have family members on this medication and they all say the same that their reliatives are experiencing many of the side affects quoted. I realy feel that something should be done about it because people are suffering from horrendous conditions such as painful joints, swollen feet and legs and night sweats, just to name a few. However all these can be tolerated, but it was the feeling of not being on this planet and the fact that I could not walk in a straight line that realy frightened me. Still after constantly speaking to my GP about how ill I was feeling I got results and am back to my old bouncy self.

Hi, Stacy, it's been almost 3 months since I stopped taking any B/P tablet, and I have managed to stay within a 148/88 range as to B/P. When I last went to the Doctor he told me if I could keep to the upper 140's and upper 80's then I would be OK. I have lost weight which helps and continued with Beetroot Tabs and so far feel OK. However it might not suit everyone and I did check this with my Doctor before starting.
