I know its was amlodipine!

I am a healthy 58 yr old and normally very active. BP was rising over the last year or so to 178/98 and so this Jan my Doc put me on Amlodipine 5mg. Thats when it started. Firstly with a loss of energy, then total loss of stamina, I felt like a Zombie all the time. As the month progressed I started to get forgetful, dizzy spells, very tingly left hand and painful joints all througfh my left side. BP did not drop as fast as hoped so Doc added Lisinopril 2.5mg. Hey... off with the faries now! After two weeks I could not concentrate on anything people were telling me and to the point that I was becoming detached from the real world. And that was only after a couple of weeks on the cocktail. I decided to trial which drug was causing this and first removed the Lisinopril for a few days then swapped over to stopping Amlodipine. Cor.. what a difference. Almost the next day after stopping Amlodipine I started to recover. After just one week people at work are now saying 'welcome back' and I know what they mean. BP not down yet but I am never going near Amlodipine again, its a wrecker!

Has anyone else had anything like my reaction?

Yes therapist, difficult to get to the truth I guess. It took me about a fortnight off AM & on Lisinopril before I was back to feeling 'normal' - feeling great now with a much improved BP - hope the same reaches you very soon.. Benefits of the people on this forum were a great help.

Well I was prescribed Amlodipine when first I was diagnosed with hypertension in 1997, in 2 years I could hardly walk, the effect it had on my bones was beyond believe, it took me awhile to realise it was down to the amlodipine, I was a crippled. Once the doctor changed medication all the symptoms reverse, now I am on several other medications and they

agree with me. Also the same happened to my eldest brother who lives in Spain and thank God I told him it had to do with this awful drug... How doctors keep prescribing me is

    beyond me.

Hi every one I hope all ok. I am so glad that I eventually convinced my GP to take me off Amlodipine because since I have been taking Losartin Potassium I have been fine. My BP is being maintained at a safe level and I have even been on holiday to Majorca without suffering a headache whilst flying. So all is good.

    Take care all

Hi all - been on Lisinopril for about 6 wks now since coming off AM, had a tickly cough which having looked on internet is a common side effect. BP absolutely fine & no other issues. Have to say that the slight tickle is dimishing the longer I'm on the pills. Anyone else had similar? I'm seeing my Doctor this Friday & would like a 'heads up' before I see her. To be honest if the 'tickle' goes eventually I'd sooner put up with this for a while longer as apart from that I am really feeling great. All the best.

I've now been off Amlodipine for over a month. A recent 7 day blood pressure readings gave me an average BP of 140/70. I'm on 50mg Losartin still but take it before sleep so not aware of any nasty side effects. I'm not walking as far as I uised to but this is just old age catching up! Have just completed my weekly session of aqua therapy which I find excellent. All in all life is great. Just cel;ebreted my 3rd birthday! a New life.

    Hi All,

I said I would update you post AM withdrawal. The side -effects went within a few days and this may be due to the fact I was only the drug for a few weeks. Now on the Losartin I only have a side-effect of tiredness which although is fustrating it is the least of all problems associated with taking medication.

My BP still needs to come down a bit more but it is certainly better than it was. Thanks to those who have passed on their experiences and wisdom-very helpful,

    best wishes

I've been on Amplodopine for 8 years and on Friday I woke up with my heart beating so fast that I thought i was having a heart attack so spent most of the day at my local A & E having tests which came back negative but I've got to have a 24 hour heart monitor to double check.

I thought the Doctor was asking questions that weren't really related to heart trouble, he took my off the Amplodopine straight away but now I realize why. I looked at the leaflet that comes with the medicine and I was slowly ticking off all the side effects, palpitations, headaches, dizziness, blocked nose/runny nose, indigestion I've been guzzling Gaviscon and rennies, blurry eyes, swollen gums the list goes on. I have felt so depressed lately but I put it down to it being the 2nd anniversary of my dear Mum passing away but that is another side effect and I've also just read on another site that vertigo is one and I've had a few bouts of that as well.

I'd been suffering from severe anaemia for years until I had a hysterectomy this time last year so I knew what it was like to have no energy but I thought it would be better once I recovered but I've still been so tired I could sleep for Team GB smile

So glad I found this forum to see that there are others that have been suffering and that there is a light at the end of the tunnel. After being on it for so long I realize that it will take a while for it to work out of my system this is the 2nd day without taking any just perindopril and bendroflumethiazide and they side effects seem to be abating. I'm going to try the beetroot juice and other natural options to try to control my BP.

    Thanks for reading.

    Best wishes

Hang in there Susan, you'll no doubt feel much better soon like the rest of us. I've been off AM now for almost 3 months & the side effects are a distant memory. This website & subsequently the conributors, were a great comfort to me, hope you find likewise.

Hi, I stopped taking Arniopine many months ago, and complained about the side effects to my Doctor. I always found that some European countries had banned this Medication. Since then and after losing weight and sticking to Beetroot Tablets only increasing my exercise, I am just recovering from a Hospital Operation where I was told my Blood pressure was good. I now realise some Doctors take the easy way out by just given pills.

Hi Susan I hope that you are feeling better now that you have stopped taking Amlodipine. It is a terrible drug and even though it may suit some people, I was one of those who suffered horrendous side effects. I am now on Losartin Potassium which is a much kinder drug and has given me my life back. I do feel tired at times sepecially when I am working nights but as long as my blood pressure is controlled then I will tolerate a few minor side effects. As the words to the song say " Things can only get better " and trust me they will. I lost both of my parents over the last two years and it has been a very hard and stressfull time which was not helped by the side effects of Amlodipine, but I am now feeling so much stronger.. I miss them terribly and still have bad days but life goes on and I have my lovely children and grandchildren to make me smile. I am glad that you found this forum because it has a great help to me especially when you realise that you are not on your own and that the sypmptoms are real . Take care

Hi I posted on this forum in June when I had just stopped taking Amlodipine . I recovered from the horrendous side effects within a few days thank goodness. It was like waking up from a weird dream. My partner was very relieved to see me coming back to normal!!

My GP was very happy to change my medication but she really didn't seem bothered about the awful side effects which I think are quite serious. I am now on Ramipril and that has really helped my BP and suits me fine.

Thanks for everyone's comments - nice to know you're not alone.

I'm slowly starting to feel better but I suppose it will take a while as I was on AM for so long. I really believe we have been to put it bluntly poisoned by this drug, I woke up this morning with jaundice as well. Like many others here I felt as if I was on another planet. I'm a mature student and my concentration was so shot to pieces I was seriously thinking of giving up my studies. Touch wood things will get better each day and I'll be back to normal soon.

Hello after reading the comments above i would like to add that i have been on amlopidine 5mg for several weeks now and have had no bad side effects what so ever, the only thing i had was a slight headache at the beginning but now nothing, i am also on ramipril 10mg as well and no problems with them at all the bonus is that my BP is now 125/80 which is great

Hi cupcake. I too am on 5mg of amlopidine. Actually I also have Idiopathic sinus tachycardia with resting heart rates of 120-130. I have always had very low blood pressure but recently it started climbing for no apparent reason. After trying 3 different drugs the dr decided to just treat the bp and not the tachycardia too and put me on amlopidine. The only side effect I have had is weight gain. I also noticed that I am extremely agitated all the time. They say that is not a side effect but I wasn't like this before the amlopidine.

No other side effects due to have a BP check on Tuesday see if there is any difference
