I live in supported housing for people who have mental illnesses.

I have lived there for many years. I am now forced to pay council tax for accommodation that is bad after being on benefit for many years and panic attacks. The Housing Association have no other better accommodation than this and I worry as I get older as I'm in my forties. I was in my thirties when I moved in. The Association said that it is difficult for me to find decent accommodation because I am a single woman. I find this unfair and has anyone any suggestions about this?

    Hi,

All local councils have their own criteria for council tax reduction. Those that are severely mentally impaired can claim for 100% reduction is their council tax but there is criteria to this and they will contact your GP for further information and for them to fill out a form. If you don't qualify for this then unfortunately most people have to pay something towards their council tax, even those claiming benefits.

Having just read your other post, if you don't qualify for the SMI i mentioned here then your savings will affect the amount of council tax reduction you can claim.
