I'm 19, a virgin & having a pelvic ultrasound & may have a transvaginal ultrasound, I'm scared!

Well, I'm not scared about the pelvic ultrasound since I've had it done before, but I may also get a transvaginal ultrasound and this is scaring the hell out of me. My doctor things I have PCOS, I think so too looking at the symptoms, acne, hair loss, excessive hair growth over the body, irregular periods, getting overweight etc. My lower stomach is really big for which I think that maybe in the ultrasound they won't be able to see properly... But, I don't want a transvaginal ultrasound. I am really scared, I hate things shoved into me, just like needles, plus it's awkward for because I don't even like showing any of my body parts to my own mother! To be honest, I'm more scared to get such an ultrasound because I'm a virgin (I've never used a tampon either), I've been doing a lot of research whether it hurts on a virgin and it does, secondly about whether they don't do it, if you tell them you're a virgin. I came across a few NHS sites which say we don't do it if you're a virgin, but not every hospital has specified. I just hope I don't have to get it done! Really scared, plus embarrasing. I feel like passing out just by the though of it, seriously since the pass I recieved the letter I feel so weak, and as if I will collapse in a minute. -_- Some one please help me... Any good advice, motivation pretty pleaaasseee...

    Hello AMG.

I had to have the internal ultrasound a few months back. It's a little uncomfortable, but not painful. But if you are worried, call the Ultrasound dept of your hospital, and have a chat to someone there.

If you can be relaxed, it will be fine. Being tense may make it more uncomfortable.

Try and 'zone out' while you are being done. Tell yourself it is for the good of your health, and that may be the motivation you need. xx

    Hey smile

i was in your EXACT position just a few months ago. I'm also 19 and a virgin, with suspected PCOS. I was so so so scared about the TV ultrasound, I really wanted to be sick every time I thought about it, and I know that in reality there won't be much anyone can say that will actually help, but I'll talk you through mine just in case it does smile

after the abdominal one, the lady (who was really nice, by the way) explained that because she hadn't been able to see properly, they would have to do the internal one. I, as imagined, freaked out and said that to be honest I'm dreading it, because I'm a virgin and have never been examined so was terrified at the whole exposure part, and she told me that I just need to relax etc etc and that they have a smaller probe for virgins (I didn't see this online!!) which is no bigger than a tampon.

so, she told me to go empty my bladder, thank goodness! I had a minute to compose myself. When I went back in she was holding the probe and had put a condom on it (I thought this was so weird! But it makes it easier so just go with it). She told me to undress from the waist down and lie on the bed with a sheet over me. By this point I was really shaking and trying not to cry. She then told me to raise my knees and have my feet flat on the bed, letting my knees fall apart ever so slightly. She squeezed lots of jel on the probe and very quickly had a look between my legs (guessing so she could see where she was aiming for!) and then put the probe under the sheet. She looked at me and said that I would feel the cold gel touching me first, and from there to let her know if anything was too uncomfortable,p. She didn't look at me down there the whole of the procedure, which was such a relief!

The gel was freezing!! She moved it around a bit over my vulva and outer lips and then pressed gently against my vagina. She then pushed harder for about a second and it was in. In that second, there was a sharp pain, like a 'pop' and a lot of stinging down there. But that only lasted two or three seconds, and I told her to keep it still in that time. Once it was in, it was fine. I wouldn't even say it was uncomfortable to be honest. She moved it around a lot, which just felt very strange, especially 1) where she pressed it right into what must be my ovaries, it was just a lot of pressure but no actual pain, and 2) when she pushed the probe downwards, so (sorry for TMI) but I could feel it pushing down on my rectum! That was a very strange sensation, and I must have looked uncomfortable because she apologised at that!

it lasts about five minutes, but just focus on a spot on the ceiling and breathe deeply, it is actually quite quick. On it's way out, the probe hurt again as it passed that point where it'd stung going in, but it wasn't that bad. By thst point I was just glad it was over! She let me wipe all the gel off myself (although I mostly waited till I was out and went to the toilet.

I know now you're scared, I was petrified. But it's not as bad as you build it up to be to your head I promise. If there's one bit of advice I have just to put your mind at ease that you might want to try, is try inserting a tampon. Even if you're not on your period. Just try putting it in and taking it out...it might sting a little, but you'll be in total control. All it will do is get you used t what it's like to have something inside you - that's what I did smile if you want advice on how to use one just let me know and I'll help if you want smile

hope oe this has helped, and good luck! It'll be fine, once it's happening and it's real, it'll be over quickly and you'll be fine.

    remember to breathe!
