I'm coming off 50mg Sertraline and I'm scared...can anybody help please?

Hi everyone,

I'm currently on Sertraline 50 mg and have been for 1 year and 5 months. I suffer from anxiety but since taking the meds my life has gotten so much better. I know I don't want to be on them the rest of my life, so I feel now is the time to start weening myself off of them...but I am so scared!

This is my first week and at the moment I am taking 1 day yes and then leaving out a day and then taking it the next day.

Any advise from anyone who can support me through this I would really appreciate it...as nobody else quite understand what I am going through sad

I am starting to get headaches and mood swings, is this normal?

Many thanks

Tania

    Hi Tania

Same as you I'm on 50mg take a day miss a day, been doing this for a week now. Getting mood swings and sometimes feeling really low, headaches too.Motivation is a problem too.Dunno how long this will take to sort itself out but I'm going to persevere with it.

Keep in touch on this one, we can share experiences.

      Hi Jcee

It's good to know I'm not the only one feeling like this or going through this.

The headaches are one of my main symptoms, but the one I'm most scared of is dizziness. Hope you're doing ok, stay strong! How are you feeling today?

Also, is it dangerous to be coming off them like this without me consulting my doctor? I'm due to see them this Thursday but I just couldn't wait another week.

      Take care

    Hi Tania

Feeling a bit down today. About coming down like this, my doc told me to do it this way so you should be OK with it.

The dizziness doesn't really get in the way too much for me as long as you expect it,it only seems to last a few mins.

    Hope this has been helpful.

    Take care

I admire you, I have tried to get off the same amount as you, but get awful head spins headaches electric zapping and generally feel physically lousy. I was never warned it would be SO DIFFICULT to get off them. I will I ever feel normal again?! If anybody out there has got off SSRI's and feels ok again please share on here? Thanks

Hi, I used to take Sertraline 50 mg for many years now to help with my stress levels as a single mum. After seeing a psychologist to get some help with my teenage boys I decided to get off the medication. My doctor advised me to half the dose for a week and then stop completely but after reading a bit  about withdrawel symptoms I've been takin half a tablet for 2 1/2 weeks now. Tomorrow I'll take 1/2 every second day. I feel like you Tania, I don't want to take them for the rest of my life.

So far I don't have any symptoms really, I get very tired when not on the go but had that before, too.

The Psychologist taught me strategies to deal with stress and anxiety and I must say so far so good. Hope you girls are feeling ok?

Hi Tania16. There's a chance that your'e feeling much better because you are taking them? 50mg per day is not a high dose but for you it may be just right. If you do decide to wean off them, maybe one on one off may be too drastic.Your body has adjusted to this daily dose that is and has helped you. Have you discussed this with your GP? Pharmacists are a good resource for help and adice too. Hope you get to where you want to be. x
