I’m experiencing new symptoms with ibs- hard and loose stool in same trip to toilet

ive been diagnosed with ibs-D for a couple years now. im only 21 so im still trying to understand it. because my main issue is with loose bowels ive been taking anti diarrhea supplements like imodium for a while. ive been worried that ive taken them too often however when i bring it up to a doctor they dont seem too worried! im currently waiting for a referal to a gastro specialist (this is the secound time ive been reffered. but in the meantime im not sure what to do!

After i have a flare up i usually take some imodium (more so if im going out somewhere) however sometimes when i take it i am consitpated for a day or 2 but sometimes it doesnt work at all! when im constipated and i finally have to go the pain is really bad i get these horrible cramps and its hard to pass to put nicely ! however once i pass the hard stool it is instantly followed by a loose one sometime diarrhea in the same sitting' im not sure if this is normal for ibs espeically when using medicins like imodium? like i said ive been using imodium for a while as previou medications pescribed by doctors havent worked or have mad it worse! im not sure if this is a cause for concern so i thought i would come here before the doctors as they will most likely tell me to wait for my specialst appointment which could be weeks from now!

hi Hannah, i think having read your post that this is usual. you take imodium which stops you having diarrhoea, you then after having so much find you are releasing hard poo then back to how you were. try speaking to your doctor and maybe cut back on the imodium. it might help. every medicine has side effects so you may be doing yourself harm. you could ask your doctor to give you anti-disrrhoeals instead, or is the imodium what your doctor gave you.? i hope you get this sorted!

Hannah, have you tried an exclusion diet? ie taking out of your diet one type of food for two weeks and seeing if things improve. The most usual culprits are dairy food milk/yoghurt/cheese/ cream. Or gluten which is mainly wheat products. I thought i had IBS but gave up all dairy products and that was it...back to normal. you have to read all the ingredients on the labels of prepared meals and cakes/biscuits and avoid them. But its worth it once you understand what you are sensitive to. It takes a few weeks of trial and error and you may have setbacks but do try.

hii, yes i was referred to a dietician a while back and was put on the fodmap diet however it wasnt much help! my ibs is mainly linked to my anxiety so being on a strict diet triggered my anxiety which in turn triggered my ibs! i want to trt and change my diet a bit however whenever ive tried to cut anything out there hasnt been much difference which is really frustrating!!
