I'm horrified at pilonidal cyst

I've only recently discovered my youngest son has a pilonidal cyst. I had three brothers and 3 sons and did not know anything about this.
My son has mild/moderate autism and quite a high pain threshold and he wasn't aware about it.
I believe he must have had it a few weeks before I discovered what was causing this strange smell.
It's looks quite nasty and he's very embarrassed but allowed my to inspect and clean the wound.
It had hairs, fluff and other debris inside it,
The doctor gave him a course of antibiotics and instructions on how to clean and pack it which is better than going to outpatients every day.
I believe the odour on discovering it was from the burst cyst and in the last couple of days it's filled up and just burst again.
Today I've noticed that about 10mm above the the hole he has the beginnings of another 2 holes opening up.
At first they just looked like 2 enlarged pores but they are getting bigger.
I'm so sad for my boy, he's such a beautiful kind and undemanding teenager, a pleasure yet he now has this awful condition.
I'm worried it's going to get bigger and not heal

I had the same problem and got operated. 10 days back.. stitches were applied.. and doc covered it with flap of skin.. I have pain , so is it because it's fresh operation and with time it will be fine? or pain should not be there at all.. as when doc touched no pain.. but sometimes I feel as some pressure is there ,as there is small opening due to suction pump pipe.. he said it will heal in ten days and will be covered.
I read many doc keep it open and with dressing let new skin come.. but in my case during operation he checked and said we don't require to keep it open. so he applied stitches with flap covering and all...
so any thing which can be suggested or added?
thanks

Reading about your son and others on this site, I believe my son's hasn't been as severe although il never take it for granted.
At this moment it's completely healed and I can no longer feel the chanel where it was draining.
I'm praying it's his 1st and last but know the rate of recurring are high.
Good luck all those who are suffering in your recovery, I've found it a very strange unpredictable condition which for some is horrendous....I think people should be made more aware of this condition as I've been shocked at how common it is yet there are no leaflets or awareness of it in my doctors surgery, maybe if we had known we could of at least tried some sort of preventative measures.
I certainly will be keeping a regular eye on my son from now on

I caught it before it became infected, I just knew it was gonna come back.
Thankfully he can't feel it but he hates me checking on it.
It drained yesterday and the sinus is a little bit smaller but I just know even when it's healed again it will come back.
The healed skin is so thin it will keep breaking down
He's referee for surgery but he's not urgent at the moment

He had appointment for to see hospital for surgery but we've had to cancel as it's not opened for about 6 weeks.
I've been keeping a close check on it and keeping the hairs around the area very short.
I still spray wipe it with antibacterial wipes and spray it 3 times a week with savlon's brand of povidine and iodine.
I'm hoping if I keep up with this for a couple of months the cavity under the skin will get smaller and smaller..
Fingers crossed
Good luck in everyone else's recovery x

Another thing to do is to get laser hair removal over the entire butt. We're going to be aggressive with that as well. It takes several months to get the hair dissolved under the skin so be patient. Definitely start laser hair removal immediately.
Any updates on your end?

Hi! I am SO SORRY to hear about your son!! In 2008 I had surgery for a really bad pilonidal cyst. I am an unusual case because I am female! I also have a skin disorder called Hidradenitis Suppurative (HS). HS is boils and lesions where there are sweat glands; at the base of the neck and hairline, under the arms, under the breasts, inner thighs, groin, and the buttock. There are multiple stages of HS, and unfortunately I am in stage 3, which is constant boils and sinus tracking. Unfortunately the HS masked the symptoms of the pilondal cyst!! Every time it appeared I treated it like my HS, and then left it alone. It probably grew for a few years, until one day it abcessed!!! I couldn't bear to have anything touch it, not even a piece of cloth from clothing or a sheet that we used to drap over me so I could lay on the couch and pull my bottoms down but still be covered!!! On Monday my boyfriend took me to my Dr who sent me straight to the emergency room!!! I had never heard of a pilondal cyst and was completely shocked!! I was also a bit in denial thinking I knew more than the Dr and that when he took me to surgery he would see that it was just a really bad HS boil!!! Boy was I wrong!!!! ;-) There the Dr said this would require two surgeries. One to drain the infection and a second to remove the cyst. So they performed the surgery and when I woke I from anesthesia I felt SO MUCH relief!!! I took a week off work to be fully recovered and I took a one month supply of antibiotics to make sure we got rid of the infection completely before going forward with the removal surgery. I had the second surgery about a month and a half after the first surgery. The surgeon said my cyst was bigger than a baseball but smaller than a softball!!!! That's HUGE!!! While I was still under anesthesia the surgeon put a wound vacuum on the opening, they wanted it to heal from the inside out. I playfully called it my tail because of the location it was coming out of from. :-) I had a nurse that came to my house 3 times a week, Mon, Wed, and Fri, and she changed the wound vac dressing. For a while I could only get comfortable laying down but after a week or two I was able to sit up. I took a total of 3 months off work. Once my wound was so small that they switched from the wound vac to having it packed by hand I went back to work. I am SO GLAD that I had such a wonderful surgeon since I have not had any reoccurrence of the cyst!!

Hi holly.....up to now its not come back. I've kept a close eye on it and a couple of times
It looked a bit red but didn't return. The skin above the cyst has what looks like 3 enlarged pores
And a few times I've tweezer'd out hairs which were working their way up the pores.
I keep the hairs short and use betadine and iodine powder.
I still live in fear it will return but up till now its nearly a year 😁 healed without surgery.
Good luck everyone
