I'm Lizzy (Kent UK) and was diagnosed with hyperthyroidism 2 days ago.

Started on Carbimazole 40mg a day and propanolol 30mg a day. Presented with severe palpitations and ectopic beats.Have been told to cancel holiday in 8 days in case of adverse effects of drug. Am 53 and presumed symptoms were due to perimenopause, flushes, memory/concentration loss, headaches, thirst, light headedness, breathlessness, losing weight (have had no appetite for 4 weeks, an opposite symptom to the norm). I am feeling a little stunned at present as I have always been healthy and am trying to educate myself as to what may lie ahead, there is so much info on the net it gives me a headache just trying to read it all! Have an appointment with endocrinologist in 2 weeks and have so many questions to be answered. Glad I found this site, it is a help to newly diagnosed.

Hi lizzy, and all who wants to read this!

I have been though the mill and not at the other side yet and don't think I will be coming out either! I started last year with the trots, bloody stools, stomach cramps and emotionally drained, I was so scared to go to the Doctors that I put all of this off, family have died from Cancer and when something like this happens it freaks you out! My husband took me to the emergency room and I was after a week diagnosed with ulcerative colitis, I was released from hospital with no information, just this stuff you squirt up your bum(pardon the language)! Great, wonderful!!!!!!! I then go for the usual test's AGAIN because my old specialist has retired and the new one thinks I have not got ulcerative colitis, I have numerous blood tests and various examinations such as colonoscopy and endoscopy and a barium enema(lovely) all resulted in the same verdict as before ulcerative colitis!!!!!! BUT BUT BUT the blood test showed I have Graves Disease (hyperthyroid) I have been put on 40mg carbimazole a day, I feel totally drained, my eyes are hurting, I'm getting constant Migraines and my eyes feel dry all the time, every joint aches! These specialist who diagnose all these illnesses should learn the word explain in lay mans terms rether than just say you have got this now go away! which is how I'm feeling. I have luckily got the use of the internet and like you I thank god this site exists! Hope you all feel better very soon! Ps was taken off beta blockers because I have ASTHMA !!!lol

    Regards

    Joanne

hi. I have brittle asthma, and after a routine blood test to check my potassium levels, my doctor told me I have thyroid disease and prescribed me carbimazole. I am totally shocked and really scared. The medication I take for ashtma already affects my heart beat! I never thought much after I managed to lose 3 stones in less than 3 months. Im 43, both my brother and my mum(has multiple sclerosis) have hypothydriodsm, I dont think we have Graves disease although I do suffer from ecczma and occasionally it comes all over my shins.....

anyone fancy chatting on msn sometime...my contact name is: ****
