I'm really worried about ankle swelling , hope someone can clarify?

I twisted my ankle while playing soccer, heard a knock sound and swell fast. Didn't do the scans since I was recovering well with RICE . I was able to bear weight on the next day and within a 3 days, was able to walk without limping. It's been 3 plus weeks now, I have returned to sports with ankle supports last week since I had no pain in running or jumping. But I'm really worried about the swelling around lateral malleolus which has never left even with ice everyday once. I can feel and bear pain on very extreme movements of ankle, it is the swelling that bugs me. Please clarify whether the swelling will go down?

Hi srinivasan,  You should really get this checked out asap.  I did similar when I was in my teens and carried on playing.  It happened a few times more and I had to have surgery when I was 19 to repair the snapped ligament in the ankle joint.  Fast forward to today where I'm 55 and am 5 weeks post ankle fusion necessitated because of end state osteoarthritis. Knowing what I know now, given the choice, I would have changed sports to protect the ankle and hopefully avoided years of pain and inconvenience - but I was young so I didn'tcool.

    Hope you recover soon,

    Andy

    Hi Srinivasan,

You didn't provide a lot of detail about your ankle sprain so it is difficult to draw conclusions about nature of your injury.

The fact that you could walk without any problem on injured ankle within a day is a good sign-- however you indicated that swelling around lateral malleolus of ankle never went away from day 1. That's worrisome. Even more worrisome is the fact that you are engaging in sport and pain reappears whenever you really exert your ankle joint in movement.

Penguin has some sage advice for you borne of  hard-won lessons about untreated ankle injury, and I hope you heed it.

    Best wishes.
