I'm really worries about upcoming double hip replacement.

hi im ryan, 34 year old male and in the next couple of months I'm going to be having a "complex double hip replacement"

I'm absolutely petrified about having this done as I'm worried I won't make it out the operation. I already have a rubbish immune system and I keep thinking there is no way I'm going to be able to recover.

I deal with horrendous anxiety and I'm constantly in bits everyday not knowing what to do. My brain keeps telling me to not go through with it, but I currently can't walk no more than 5 meters without being in severe pain. Is there anyone on here that has had a complex double hip replacement before? and could maybe help put my mind as ease.

thanks

Ryan

Thr surgery can be a challenge. i have had 3 thr surgeries and each one is different. the last one was complex and did take longer to rehab than primary surgeries. in my case it was worth it improved my mobility and quality of life.

is there a particular reason that at 34 yrs the surgeon recommends surgery on both at the same time. a lot of patients can do well at your young age. if its not immediately necessary is there possibility to have hips done 6-8 months apart. rehab with one hip is a challenge . pre surgery complications and pain could be the driving force for both hips .

whatever your decision only you can decide. having complete confidence in your surgeon and that he has done hundreds in the last year is essential.he is well versed in the join replacement protocols and should have a qualified team in the op room, recovery and rehab . your positive attitude is 50% of recovery. its always a bit hard at first and looking foreword to less pain and better mobility is a great motivation.

the surgeon is responsible to keep the patient comfortable after surgery and important to take pain meds as prescribed will be the biggest factor to helping with recovery as well as proper home care or rehab at a facility rather than home for the first 3 weeks if possible. It would be most helpful for your recovery. that's what i decided the third hip was complex surgery it was so much easier to have no worries about home care issues dressing movements daily personal care diet and just concentrate on walking comfortably using a walker and have the confidence to be home .

generally three weeks post surgery there's not a whole lot of healing takes place . the bone is growing to support the hip components and slowly walking is all that you should do to get strong and continue on your journey to recovery.

    sending positive vibes your way.

Hi Ryan - Unless you will have a caregiver with you 24/7 for about 3 months, I would not advise having both hips replaced at the same time. I had my right hip replaced 7 months ago and it was very painful with slow recovery but I'm 76. You're very young so you should breeze through much easier than I did. I know, it makes sense to just "get it over with" and not have to go through two recovery processes, but doing both at the same time, in my opinion, isn't a wise choice. Keep me posted.

Hip replacement surgery is one of the most succesful operations in the world, you have every chance of coming out of it in a lot better state than when you went in. I had both my hips done separately, but I am older than you. I am taking steroids for an auto immune disease, which are an immune suppressor. A friend had both done together and she was in her fifties. She was teaching children gymnastics afterwards. I had my sister with me for a week to help after the op, after that I was in my own.

when surgery for hip joint replacement is next on the agenda . the most important issue for a positive outcome is to be sure the surgeon is highly experienced , qualified and does hundreds not just two or thee and other ortho repairs a month. a surgeon with a well trained team is essential . just because its a common surgery done today does not mean the surgeon is qualified. the surgeon must have a great deal and years of experience. be careful with surgeons that espouse that they have the best team and latest surgery technique in technology today and equipment , top of the line model . not always the best surgeons.
