I'm so scared I'm having a heart attack

I have been having bad anxiety for a couple of weeks now and it all started when my face felt numb and I thought I was having a stroke. The think that is scaring me is that I just feel weird my anxiety went for about 7/8 months and now it's back it's nearly every week I think something else is up with me like I'm bipolar, I'm schizophrenic or I'm having a heart attack. I have been having jaw pain that comes for a second then goes for a couple of days and I Googled it and it came up early heart attack warning signs and I'm so scared now I feel like I'm at deaths door.

Dom, you're right that a heart attack can (very rarely) manifest as jaw pain, but that kind of pain definitely doesn't come just for a second and go away. (I'm a former nurse with a year or so of A&E experience.) It gets steadily worse, spreads to your chest and then you collapse. I realise you're scared, but it's obvious you haven't collapsed!

The numbness in your face is far more likely to be down to hyperventilation. This can happen at quite low levels in some anxiety states, without you realising you're doing it. It can also cause numbness, tingling and even stiffness in the hands.

You don't say whether or not you're being treated for this anxiety crisis you're going through. You need to get to your GP. He/she can give you a general check-up to make sure you're physically OK, maybe prescribe something to calm you down a bit, then hopefully refer you for CBT, which often works very well for cases like yours.

Dom, these are all classic symptoms of a panic attack, including the fact that you feel it's getting worse and something terrible is about to happen. Something has clearly triggered your panic attacks in the past few weeks. Could be something quite trivial, especially if - as you say - you've had a history of anxiety. Nothing is going to happen to you over the weekend.

If you're scared, you could always call the Samaritans (I'm assuming you're in the UK - if you're not, there's bound to be something similar where you are). They're quite used to talking people through panic attacks. If you're absolutely desperate, go to A&E, though I'm afraid you'll have a very long wait there - especially tonight when it's going to be full of drunks - and they'll almost certainly end up giving you a mild sedative and sending you home again.

I never suffered real panic attacks, but I did suffer from anxiety when I was young, which caused me to hyperventilate. Something that still happens now - though only occasionally. What I find worked for me is to sit down quietly, and make yourself not breathe quite as deeply or as quickly as you want to. It makes you feel even more breathless at first, of course. Keep it up till you feel you can't do it any longer - maybe only about 20 secs at first - then let yourself take one big breath. Then start again with shallow, slow breathing. Do this for as long as you need to. If you really keep it up for a while, it should eventually bring you down a bit.

Try and hang in there till Monday.

also my jaw pain is on the right side I don't know if that makes any difference, I will try what you said thank you. Do you know if anxiety can be cured or not?

Being on the right side makes it even less likely that it's heart-related!

Anxiety can never be totally cured as it's part of your personality, but it can definitely be managed. It generally gets better with age too, especially in people who've addressed the problem when they were young. CBT (cognitive behavioural therapy) would probably help a lot - provided it's available in your area - but your therapist can only guide you. You'll have to do most of the work yourself.

I too agree with everything lily65668 is telling you, it is sound advice. I know what anxiety can do - but one rather callous doc told me "it may feel bad but nobody dies from anxiety"! I didn't believe him at the time, but I got through it and so can you. You just need some help.

I agree, Pixie, it does sound a bit callous but it's true. These days I volunteer on a crisis line. Like all services of this kind, we get quite a lot of calls from people having panic attacks. If we can't bring them down any other way, we're actually instructed to say just that: "Nobody ever died from a panic attack!"
