I’m so tired but as soon as I get into bed I’m wide awake

I’ve previously posted on here as I suffer terribly with insomnia and have done for a long time. A recent period of low mood is forcing me to try and address the issue as I believe my lack of sleep is certainly a contributor.

I follow the the usual guidance, hot caffeine free drink, no devices, reading a book but to no avail. I get up and go downstairs, and find that I can drop off easier on the sofa than I can in bed! (Not always though) On a rare occasion, when I’m feeling so very tired, I have slept for an hour or so in the day, dropping off very easily. Why can I not do this at night? 3am seems to be my norm for finally falling asleep. Anyone have any similar experiences or words of advice. I’m desperate to fall asleep at a reasonable time!

I fall asleep in the recliner in the living room faster than I do in my bed. Sometimes I lay there and rest but not sleep. I feel anxious about sleeping sometimes and that makes sleeping ever harder. I feel like my mind doesn't shut off sometimes. Have you tried natural remedies like melatonin?

Thanks for your response. I have tried, Nytol, valerian and Phenergan, all of which haven’t helped. I do have some Melatonin 10mg I bought on line, but when I’ve researched it this seems like a high dose so I’ve been scared to take it. What dose would you suggest trying?

I’m in the Uk. I will try and cut the 10mg in half and try that. Thank you for your comments.

Sorry I keep forgetting that people from all over the world post in these forums. It makes it so nice to know other people have the same issues but hard to know how to help when the stores and medicine can be different. Best of luck. Keep us posted will you?

It is nice to know you are not alone as sometimes you feel you’re the only person in the world going through it.

Thank you for your advice, I will keep you posted.

Ask your doctor for 20 mg of Amitriptyline.  It makes you feel drowsy enough to sleep and has a long half life so it lasts all night.  Then when your sleep cycle is restored you can reduce dosage and stop taking.

Thanks for your response. I was previously prescribed Amitriptyline for an overactive bladder. Whilst it helped for this it didn’t induce sleep, I was on 40mg at night.

It sounds to me that ur hormones r off.. Ur cortisol level mostly. Cortisol level works as this.. they're r supposed to be high in the morning and drop thru out the day(lower at night) try sleeping before 10 pm. 11 is when they start spiking again if ur levels r off. There r some herbs that'll help, also a good diet. And a couple others things. Do ur best to avoid naps as well

I’ve had my thyroid and fsh bloods done which were ok ( fsh consistent with my age) Do you know if there is a blood test I could have to check my cortisol Level?

Depending where the Dr sends the test to if its under 3.2 or 4.4 for thyroid they'll consider u good. So tell me Y some labs consider under 3.2 good and y some under 4.4. Just don't makes sense. Now a Dr that knows what they're doin with test all ur thyroid levels, T3's ECT. Ur TSH level should be around 1.7 at optimal range. There is a cortisol test. (Don't do the blood 8 am morning test) its pointless it only shows ur mornin cortisol level.. The best one is a saliva test. It test ur levels 4 times thru the day( u see if they're too low or high) u can order the test kit online and it gives u the instructions in the kit. . I had to do this cuz i was gettin down to the bottom of my sickness
