I'm still a virgin, but I have BV.

I'm 17 years old and a virgin. I've had an off coloured, odoured discharge for what I can remember would be under 2 years now.

I originally went to the doctors and they gave me antibiotics to take for a period of time but the infection did not seem to go. The effort made for me to even pluck up the courage to get an appointment was bad enough, to do it again I was really embarrassed (I know I've been told I shouldn't be). I went again and they offered a cream which I also tried but did not seem to kill the infection.

I have not since been back to the doctor and have often read that these treatments aren't that useful anyway as they only kill the bad bacteria and does not protect the good.

I have never been sexually active however I have always wondered if masturbation had anything to do with it as I have done so before. (Which I didn't tell the doctor as I was very embarrassed)

As much as I know it's a normal infection and should not be embarrassed, I'm embarrassed to tell my boyfriend of it and it's why we have not yet had sex. I've heard that the smell gets worse but I don't know whether that is during sex or to come afterwords.

I have tried not wearing underwear to bed and wearing loose clothing for my vagina to air, but it's hard to wear baggy clothing in England where it's always cold and need to wrap up warm especially for sixth form.

I've also tried to only wash over the vagina area opposed to vaginal douching and any harsh washing actions.

Is there any actual remedies that do work and are accessible for a 17 year old.

Many thanks!!

Hi Jersey Price, have the doctors taken a swab to see what kind of infection it is? Are they certain it's an infection? If they have given you antibiotics they suspect BV or other type bacterial infection. You don't say whether you have itching or burning... or any other symptoms Some people do get some natural strange discharge and odour even when there is no infection. As long as the smell isn't fishy and very offensive as that is almost always caused by BV. Sometimes the ph and vaginal flora is off. Make sure you are eating healthy, try some women s probiotics designed to help restore the flora and the fo bacteria in the vaginal area. Antibiotics can lead to things like thrush so that could a cause for discharge and itching. Make sure you speak to your gp and find out what they have tested you for.

Hi, yes they did take a swab, I can't remember exactly what they said but all signs pointed towards bv. In regards to my symptoms, the dishcarge does encounter the fishy smell but I don't not have any itching or burning. I'm looking to venture out today and look for some probiotics!

      Thank you for your response!

Hon i know its embarrassing for you and there are ways to alleviate some of the yuk that comes with bv. You could try douching with peroxide. I know that sounds scary but ive done it full strength and it makes you feel much cleaner and takes odor away for a few..i just read about a study where they took 20 women with BV and inserted white distilled vinegar in them and they held it for 3 minutes and and then they released it and when they check them two weeks later 85% of them had no signs of BV whatsoever and the other was completely gone I haven't yet tried this but I'm planning on using it soon! I believe they used a half and half with water. Also i know peroxide soaked tampons worn.Overnight help. Eat yogurt!

Hi Jersey Price, I guess bv is different for all women! From coming on here that's what I've gathered but for me personally BV symptoms are a very foul fishy odor/ watery discharge, & yes it gets worse while your engaging in sex! Oh my its horrible! I am married & get embarrassed when my hubby wants sex because I have to say my vagina stinks I'm sorry! ;( I've found that if you buy these OTC pills called acidophilus it helps restore your pH down there..You can purchase these @ Walmart if you have one there or online.. The ones with more active live cultures are best I think I have the billion ones not sure! You have to store these pills in the refrigerator. But so far so good with these. And also I use only dove soap on the outside vaginal area my gyno said those summers eve vaginal washes are not good for your nether regions just unscented soaps! & I purchased a water works a vaginal cleansing system for the inside of the vagina! Ive taken up too much of your time but that can be found online also..

Probiotics. Don't douche! You can get probiotics at any health store or drug store...or even online...Best to treat internally. I used to stuggle with this and tried douching, applie cider, everything and finally tried probiotics you have to take them regularly...everyday or every other day and they are good for overall health not just BV.
