I'm very, VERY scared to catch a disease, be sick and vomit... I'm SO ANXIOUS! Help, please!

On Sunday, I found out my neighbour was very sick. She was sick on Monday but the only details I got was that she was up at night screaming, crying and hallucinating a little. Tuesday I found out her younger sister was also sick, both of them with a high temperature (something like 37-39 C). They vomited multiple times throughout the night, cried and screamed, couldn't sleep and were very sick.

I'm a VERY severe sufferer of Hypochondria, Emetophobia and Verminophobia. I absolutely refuse to get sick and I m so scared I will. A cold is okay, but the minute it turns to something where there s a chance I'll vomit I'll get so anxious and so terrified, so I hate it when people tell me  you can t stop it  or  I dunno what to tell you because there s a chance you ll get sick . I usually rely on somebody to tell me that I ll be okay when my neighbours get sick and they usually do, which calms me, but today when I expressed my concerns to them they simply said "I dunno what to tell you," but not anything like "don t worry, you won t get sick" formally. When I questioned why they explained there s a higher chance this disease with my neighbours is contagious and I might get sick, that it s going around, there s a higher chance, you know... This made me anxious. I m currently feeling a little weak, a teeny bit nauseous and in general SCARED, TERRIFIED and completely PETRIFIED. I haven t felt exactly SICK in the past week or so but now that I think about it maybe I haven t felt 100%.

I had emetophobia, too, so I totally understand.

I wanted to train to be a nurse but I knew I'd meet people who threw up, so I o

put it out of my mind. I went to see my GP and she recommended Behavioural Therapy.

I was still scared but I DID start training to be a nurse. It was (unbelievably) three months before I was with a patient who had severe burns and couldn't move, who suddenly felt sick. I couldn't run away so I gave her a bowl and after she threw up I gave her a mouthwash. I realised then that there was nothing at all to fear.

I stayed in nursing then became a midwife. It's been forty years since the emetophobia went away - I don't even thnk about it.

I know that telling you this isn't very helpful in any constructive way, but I wanted you to know that people do manage to overcome phobias.

I hope you've had some treatment from your doctor to help with your anxieties.

This is a hideous situation to be in. I hope, in a way, that you DO catch this bug, because then you'll be cured. Easy for me to say and difficult for you to read.

Please ask your doctor for help, if you haven't already done so.

My mind is out of control and I worry every sec of every day of being sick. ...to the point where I wasn't eating. I went back on an antidepressant recently which is helping a bit.

I'm sorry you're going through this, too. And I'm glad you've offered to message Greenliquid.

      Good luck to you both.

Well, I was very surprised that i DID get over it, but I remember the terror, which was agonising, and nobody could understand, till I did get over it.

I wouldn't get on a bus or a train in case someone was sick. I stayed off school for months because I was scared that somebody mght throw up.

Believe me, I've been there, and it was absolutely AWFUL.

Best of luck, you two!   XX Tess
