I presume I have PAF

2010 I had symptoms of, what I thought was stomach ache, which turned out to be PAF. I was taken to hospital, before reaching hospital my heart rate had gone back to normal. Since then I have had 4 episodes, all episodes have been the same except the last one where I had a discomfort in my upper chest. I have had all the monitors that you could think of and the outcome is always the same. Your heart is fine !!!

Is there anybody out there who has similar symptoms.

Perhaps you can ask a doctor to give you an event monitor. You will be able to get the event monitor to

record only when you feel that you are having an episode. Since ECG's and Holter monitors only capture

episodes for a specifc amount of time, they don't always capute it. How do you know that you have Afib? Have you been formally diagnosed?

Sorry I meant to say "capture" and not "capute"

Thank you for your input when it first happened I wore a monitor for three days and of course nothing happened. As I said I presume I have PAF ? My heart rate increases to about 170 - 180 and then after an hour it returns to normal. 4 episodes over approx 4 years does not give the doctors much of a chance to diagnose. My main reason for posting this is to try and find out the reasons why it happens and what if anything I can do to allay these attacks. Thanks again.

I would stay away for caffeine, alcohol & heavy meals. Also, if you smoke stop. Hope this helps and good luck smile

Paroxysmal Atrial Fibrillation is an arrhythmia. If your heart is in sinus rhythm but beating fast it probably isn't PAF but is termed tachycardia. Best thing to do when you get an episode is to go to A&E asap and get it diagnosed.

If you went to hospital by ambulance I would expect the medics to diagnose AF, to me the symptoms are unmistakable.

Good advice from dee and marco. If you check the pulse in your wrist when you feel your heart is racing you can usually feel whether it is regular or irregular. If it's irregular, it may be Paroxismal A/F. However, if you can get to hospital, a simple heart trace will show if it's A/F.
