I started taking Lansoprazole at the age of 27 and have been using it daily for five years. I used to get these terrible throbbing pains in my upper stomach, which would spread upwards into my food pipe. The pain would get worse and worse, and go right through to my back. When it first happened I thought I was having a heart attack! The Lansoprazole is very effective. I started on 30mg for about two years, then went down to 15mg for about 6-months, but then the pains came back, at times so badly that I had to walk out of work meetings and go home as it was impossible for me sit there and disguide the pain I was in. I'm now back up to 30mg daily. My doctor says the government recommends 15mg but that doesn't work for everyone. Apparently the government want to make it only avaialble over the counter which worries me, as it costs about £10 for 6 tablets, but at the moment I get a three month prescription for about £7. I have had a gastroscopy (tube down my throat, into my stomach) and all they saw was a little inflammation, I also had treatment for H. Pylori bacteria but that didn't do anything, I suspect because I wasn't infected in the first place. The doctor was at a loss and admitted he was treating my by a process of elimination. It is frustrating to live with this without a clear diagnosis and worries me about long term effects on my health, but most of the time the medication does its job and life goes on as normal. Last night I had a rare, but prolonged attack that kept me awake for two hours, and I tried swallowing air and burping it back out - it seemed to work bizarrely enough! If anyone wants to get in touch re. this please do as I could do with sharing this sometimes with other sufferers instead of feeling like a freak with an exotic disease at the doctors! Thanks.

I hope you have found my posts - they follow your description quite well, but my pain comes at night. 15mg is all I need, but I get 39mg capsules and have half of one a day - to keep the price down. I try wall pressups to shift the 'gas', hopping from one foot to the other and banging my chest. I'm not sure if it works, but doing something helps ! My Step Son had a crippling attack last night too. There is a lot of it about these days.

I had similar symptoms and an endoscopy showed that I had Gerd with some damage to the top of my oesophagus, so I was recommended 15mg daily Lansoprazole for the rest of my life. It helps, but I still have to be careful. My main symptom was severe pain under my sternum after eating during the day, around lunchtime. I eventually found that it could be relieved by burping, and decided that the cause was trapped wind. The lansoprazole (which I take after my evening meal) seems to have cured this, but I often wake up a couple of hours after going to bed with quite severe pain in my right upper thorax. Interestingly, this is usually preceeded by pain in one of my upper right teeth - I and my dentist have no idea why, but it always works as a signal of the onset of the chest pain. I then relieve it by burping as much as I can, and if that fails I chew a simple ant-acid chalk pill. That and walking about a bit always works. I do have an unpleasant metallic or acidic taste in my mouth when I wake up in the morning, which I put down to acid reflux. I always used to eat a lot, without putting on weight, and my consultant blamed this for causing my hiatus hernia and gerd, with some damage evident to the top of my oesophagous. As a consequence I now try not to eat and drink so much, especially late at night; not to go straight to bed after eating but stay upright for as long as possible, and avoid acidic drinks. I have yet to have a follow up endoscopy, but find my symptoms much relieved. I am worried about diverticulitis though - the lansoprazole causes some constipation, a consequence of which was an inguinal hernia, which had to be operated on. I had a net inserted with a keyhole procedure, but now find that if I work too hard (I am a builder) I feel some pain at what I presume are the attachment points of the net. Trouble is this becomes confused with what might be the typical lower left pain of diverticulitis. Life is complicated! Don't eat or drink too much, and try never to get sunburned (I had a melanoma removed 3.5 years ago, after being sunburned many times as as child!) One other thing I find is that if I drive when I am tired, I can burp for England, almost continuously. I am not sure what that is doing for the ozone layer.

The symptoms that has been described are almost identical to the suffering I have insured, it was so bad that nothing worked not even zantact, I literally wanted to die, I found I had to eat every two hours to eleviate the pain, and it was mainly cerials, my x wife did some extensive research and advised me that I may have a disease called:HELICOBACTER PYLORI, I put these findings to my doctor who had never herd if it, so he told me to return in a few days; where he proscribed a concussion of penicillin and anti-bactera drugs to my absolute amazement after over two years of crippling suffering I was ok within 24 hours, I must admit I have my x to thank along wit a doctor who listens, praise be to god.

Hi, i got put on lansoprazole about ten years ago! Going to get an appointment with my doctor as nobody has ever asked how i was doing on it, it's used for me to counteract the acid reflux caused by a combination of lefluonomide and hydroxychloroquine for my rheumatoid arthritis. Just the last couple of weeks i have had horrendous heartburn all times of the day despite still taking lansoprazole, living on gaviscon at the moment. I also went for a colonoscopy about 3 years ago when i started suffering from severe diarrhoea and a massive bloated stomach and was told they could'nt find anything so they diagnosed me with irritable bowel syndrome, have not been the same since. Like you, i feel like i'm ban ging my head against a brick wall and a lot of time i skip meals because i just don't know what i can eat that won't cause me agony! Frustrating to say the least. I really do believe the lansoprazole aggravates the stomach and makes things worse, it also causes malabsorption of food and you can be lacking in magnesium and important vitamins, and here's a last thought for you, clinical trials were not carried out past a year, so you like me seem to be a human guineapig. I hope this enlightens you a bit and makes you feel like you're not alone, take care, lorraine
