I am taking 3  - 20 mg. of prednisone for 5 days and now on 2 - 20 mg. for 5 days and the last five days I feel very shaky, dizzy, nervous, like my legs won't hold me up and yesterday had the dry hives.  I am now wondering if this is from the prednisone?  I have been having a lot of trouble with my auto aumine system and my total amylase is 314, pancreatic ISO 34, Salivary ISO 280.  I am pre-diabetic and I told the nurse I was pre-diabetic but she said it didn't matter.  I feel like I should quite taking the prednisone immediately.  Any ideas?

You want to be very careful about coming off Prednisone. Please ask your doctor not just the nurse.  Ask to speak to the doctor as he/she needs to know what you are experiencing for you to be helped with this.....very important. Please seek advise and keep us posted.

    Hi Ruby

This is Wendy again......I have Chronic Urticaria and have been on Prednisone a lot the past year to keep the hives away.  I have been on a very slow taper going off Prednisone by going down 1mg each week. Example: 20 mg for 7 days then down to 19mg for 7 days then 18mg and so on.........I'm also having to take Cyclosporine and now slowly going down on that hoping to go into Remission.  We are all different with different diseases....just wanted to share the importance of doctors care...in my case gradual is good with no side effects....just praying my bones will be okay.

    take good care!🌺

      Hi Wendy,

Thank you for your reply.  I have taken prednisone probably about 5 other times for skin problems and have had no side effects.

However, in May 2015 I had a tumor on my kidney and 80% chance of cancer which turned out OK.  I have an enlarged NAFL and have had pain for over a year on right top flank and have been checked for gallbladder, pancreatic tests, about every test you can think of and now the GI had me do another blood test because she thinks my pancreastrist is not working on my cards.  I have had four tests in the last three weeks.  I just got done with a endoscopy and colonoscopy with many biopsies and said all were pretty much normal except for small ulcer, gerd, etc. I just had the last blood test done Friday and I told the GI's nurse I had started taking prednisone and would that mess up my blood test and she checked and said no it wouldn't mess with it.  Some times you really don't know what to do.  I appreciate your response.  Thank you so much.

      Oh my goodness Ruby

first of all thank the Lord that the tumor on kidney was NOT cancer!  I do not know what NAFL is.  You have been through a lot of testing and I can imagine how frustrating it is.  Our daughter is going through similar issues with pain and Doctor taking blood and some tests and not able to find issue yet as tests come back normal.

      Hang in there Ruby!

      i wish you the best!

Thank you, and the best to your daughter.  Sorry NAFL is non-alcholic liver disease at least 50%.  ICK!

Good luck to you and your family.

These are usual side effects of taking high dose pred. It will improve as you reduce the dose. How long are you to be on it altogether? The diabetes problem with pred is only really for long term use and it sounds as if you are just on this for a couple of weeks. You shouldn't quit taking pred immediately without speaking to your doctor though, even after a week or two at a high dose you should reduce the dose gradually. 60mg/day is a high dose.

      Hi Eileen,

Thank you for your reply.  I talked to my Endocrinologist doctor today and he told me pred can raise your glucose and give me all the side effects that I have been having.  I am going in the morning for a glucose test (with fasting) and see if that is the cause of my problems.  I appreciate all responses and will reply when I find the answer.  Thank you all again for your replies.  It's always nice to know when you have a medical problem there are other people out there that have had the same problems and can guide you to what you need to do.  Thanks again to everyone.

The doctor called me with by Glucose and it was 102 so I'm still in pre diabetic count and the pred did not raise my glucose.  I am still shaky, dizzy, nervous, etc. and he told me I would need to go to my GP to try and find out the cause because it is not the prednisone.  I only have 2 pills left of pred and I will be finished with them.  Thanks to all for their comments and information.

How any doctor can say "it isn't the pred" when you are still taking some and they are absolutely typical problems is beyond me. However, you are nearly finished with the pred - and if it continues they will investigate. Good luck.

    Hi Ruby

I don't know if you're also taking Vitamin D supplements, like Adcal.  I was getting the weak/shaky legs until I read that the steroid and Adcal clash, and it was better to take steroids after breakfast, and Vitamin D with lunch and supper.  Don't know if you knew this already smile
