I still have a UTI after finishing a course of antibiotics? Why didn't drug kill it all off?

I'm 25 and not sexually active. After having a burning discomfort down there and lower back pains that my doctors were ignoring for weeks to months they finally did a test and discovered I had a UTI. I was put in Macrobid/ nitrofutonin 100mg 1 pill twice a day for 5 days. I took the medicine EXACTLY as prescribed. I was drinking both cranberry juice and water to flush it out completely. I did notice an immediate difference in the pain when I was taking the antibiotics. However, by the 4th day of treatment I noticed My infection stopped responding to the antibiotics. So I just assumed maybe it's residual burning and irritation from having a UTI for awhile. Plus I thought once I finish the course maybe it needed time to kick in so waited a few weeks to see if there would be difference.
So about 3-4 weeks later I decided to go back to the doctor to have my urine retested as the burning would come and go and was still causing me slight discomfort. My results came back today that I still have a UTI. Apparently it's the SAME bacteria from the first time. My lab culture says its "1,000-9,000 cocci gram positive isolated". I'm glad he bacteria hasn't grown back to the 10,000-50,000 amount I was seeing on my culture before after so many weeks. Why didn't the antibiotics kill off ALL of the bacteria? What do I do now? I know for a fact it's not a reinfection it's the SAME UTI that didn't fully clear up. I was still experiencing symptoms after i finished the course. Please help!

Hi! I think this is some important information since I've been in your position for about three weeks now (I know, the pain sucks). I too have went to several doctors...regular doctor, urologist, etc. I was put on three different antibiotics: Bactrim, Cipro and Nitrofurtonin. At first the back pains and extreme pain went away, but the burning didn't even after I was done with my course of antibiotics. I finally went to my gynecologist yesterday, and she gave me a cream called RECTICARE (lidocaine 5% anorectal cream) which is over the counter. I suspect the burning when you pee is not from UTI but from the irritation the antibiotics gave you (which is what my gyn told me when she saw my irritated urethra). THIS CREAM HELPED ME IMMENSELYYY within an hour. So please, visit your gynecologist and maybe she can tell if your urethra is irritated and prescribe you a cream.

You put that cream on your opening of urethra? I have Lidocaine cream for urethra. Did nothing. Burning is up inside urethra from infection. So the bladder infection needs to be killed or that just covers up the pain as the infection grows. But if it gives some relief from burning I'm willing to try anything. Over the counter????

This sounds very familiar. Several months ago I had a sharp then dull pain in my groin area, concerned it was appendix I went to the ER, they assured me it wasn't that, but that I had a uti, I was in shock because the only two I ever had I would have terrible symptoms razor blade feeling when peeing....however that is what it showed, so they prescribed 3 days of macrobid. Unfortunately I only got through two doses as it made me so sick I could not take another pill.......so back to my family doc and she prescribed a sulfa which I had tolerated in the past.....three days into that I started getting itchy and then short of breath, so off to the ER, they told me to stop, did a urine sample and I was in the clear not more antibiotics YEAH!!!! The dull pain was still there and would come and go but I was thankful I was done with these meds. Fast forward to now 5 months later one evening I am feeling like peeing after I pee, thinking it was because I was drinking a lot due to the heat wave, I started drinking the real tart tasting cranberry juice and bought a bladder cleanse in case it was a start of something.I past it off, but as the days followed it was becoming bothersome....I got two samples done which showed WBC but the culture said three or more organisms found probable contamination, so they ordered a pelvic ultra sound, which showed that there is an issue with post voiding and I am going to be reffered to a uroligist. Still not explaining the discomfort I went to two different ER and my urine test came back negative both times, I finally saw a nurse practitioner who despite the urine coming back normal she sent it for a culture.....after three days it showed growth of strep b and it is senstitive to penicillan....hmmm last time I took that I broke out in a rash.....so they are trying amoxcillian seeing I tolerated it in the past.....I am on day three and every time I take it I get extreme itchy and a scratchy throat, the pharmacist told me to take an antihistamine, but if I get swelling to go to ER right away....easier said than done when I am here alone with my kids day and not and not a lot of support. I was precribed for 7 days three times a day, I have reduced it to twice a day seeing I am senstive, which can still work....I am not sure I can take this for 7 days, but I am going to try. I really question if my UTI really went away from the last time, as I have been so careful and taking cranberry daily. I can't seem to finish the full doses due to sensitivity, it is very frustrating. On a referral list to see an allergist to get desensitized, that will be one less concern if I get any future one. Hard to clear infetions when you can't tolerate the medication.

Amoxicillan is in the penicillan family so it's no surprise you have many of the same allergic reactions.

Yes, we thought we would try because I have reactions with all the antibiotics that cover UTI's.....I have not tried Cipro or monorol, the doctor is hesitant due to my intolerance to the antibiotics and these are stronger medications....I keep going back for cultures and I am getting no growth, or no significant growth, but still at times have frequent urges or stinging pain....I am waiting to see a uroligist in the meantime, I am trying to combat and keep it under control with natural remedies, D-mannose, cranberry, probiotics and drinking lots to flush out anything that may be causing it. I still am considering ozone treatment which is done by cathader and kills off any bacteria or organisms. So many of us rely on antibiotics, but the problem is there are many becoming resistant or allergic to them and it then becomes a bigger issue. I miss the days where when I had an infection, I took medication for a few days and went on with my life, now it is a different story. Antibiotics are good when used properly, but when given when there truly is not an infection, this causes issues in the future. I find more doctors now use antibiotics as the last resort and I can understand why.

If you're taking cranberry make sure it is in supplement form and not cranberry juice. The juice has a lot of sugar that can cause UTIs! Good luck - going through the same thing!

Since first posting this discussion I have since seen improvement in my bladder. It's not 100% perfect, but it is better than what it used to be. I'm no longer feeling that stinging pain I was once having that burned so bad I was afraid to urinate. After my UTI I spoke with a naturopathic Doctor and some family members who are into natural cures and I have seen an improvement. Like I said it's not 100% perfect. Some days the slight sting comes back, but that's usually because i either drank too much acidic juice in one day and not enough water. I did cut back on the juice since then and drank only cold water and noticed it did help. It seems all the antibiotics I was on and the infection possibly caused me to have some bladder irritation that maybe needed time to heal. However, I still have bacteria growing on my culture. I still DON'T believe I have cystitis. My gut instincts just tell me that. I have not been to a urologist yet as I am in the middle of switching to a new health insurance as well as new job and won't be able to see one yet until probably the end of the month hopefully. So I cross my fingers that whatever is going on resolves soon as I have been experiencing some ease in my urinary discomfort. I just have to becareful with the juice and not stray to much from water. I will keep you all updated on my status once I speak with a new doctor and get a new opinion. Since I now work for a very well respected medical college in my state I should find some permanent ease soon. I'm hoping they can do something. I've heard great things about them and about their medical advancements. Maybe I can finally have my life back.

I'm not trying to be in denial about cystitis, but I just know my body well enough that my intuition is just telling me that couldn't be it. I feel like it's something that is easily fixable that maybe doctors are missing for some reason. Also, I found out that those castille soap wipes the doctors make you use before peeing in a cup I'm allergic to. That's what was exacerbating my pain too. After I would wipe with those things I would have horrible discharge, burning, swelling, and pain. I thought it was the UTI the whole time or a yeast infection. I had to do my own investigative work and realized I was allergic to it. The one time I didn't use it after a UTI test I noticed I wasn't in ALOT of pain and burning like crazy. I'm HIGHLY sensitive to it. Just thinking about it brings back horrible memories. I remember o was testing for a UTI ALOT in one month and I kept using those wipes. I had to use pure aloe Vera gel down there which helped with the pain SIGNIFICANTLY. Come to think of it I use to NEVER use those wipes when the doctors gave them to me before a urine test. I think I just got curious and used it and I noticed that's when things started taking an odd turn for me down there too. However, I also always had bacteria in my urine for years it seems. I saw my lab work for 2 years ago and I ALWAYS hand an unsymptomatic UTI since back then as my WBC count in my urine was reading as 2+, but I always thought it's because I didn't use those castille wipes. I'm not a doctor, but I know for a fact now I am allergic to it. It stings horribly when I use it.

Stopping (or greatly reducing) acidic or spicy foods and drinks *is* nearly 100% the way Interstitial Cystitis is treated. I haven't had anything but water in nearly five years because any "pleasure" I might have gotten from that soda, coffee or tea isn't worth the price I'd be sure to pay afterwards.
We all learn quickly what our trigger foods are and avoid them.

So did you ever get relief? I've had to take benadryl on and off since my infection 2 months ago. I was so inflamed and in so much pain bc it took a month to get into my urologist when my GP didn't find any bacteria. I am hoping I just have minor irritation that will eventually clear up. I don't want to ever do a lot of food restrictions on a permanent basis.

How are you making out!? I'm in same boat but I had Ecoli since Sept. I know it's just not gone yet. Two Drs just slapped me with having IC. One never even checked my urine and the other just gave me some antibiotics and because they didn't kill off my infection I Must have IC. Ridiculous. Of course acidic foods can hurt you when you have an infection. NOT just when you have a disease. Drs need to stop diagnosing people with this awful disease with no cure just because they are lazy or don't know what else to do. Drs are all textbook. That's why. I'm trying d Mannose. I'll let you know how I make out. My diet didn't help me at all either way. Still in awful pain. Bacteria is Infection. Not IC. Good luck! This sucks!
