i have never experienced anything like this before, but i remember years ago when i was about 13, i woke up in my bed and was unable to move my body for a few moments. not sure it that is related to this or not. i am a 25 yr old female with severe anxiety and moderate depression and have been recieving medication for it for years and this week i had two scary experiences the first one felt real in the beginning and then at the end i realized it was a dream because my brother lives far away from my home and i had been asleep for hours when this first one occured. i think it might have been likely that they both happened at the similar time and the second ecperience i had just laid down to go to sleep around 5 a.m. or so and it felt like the second one started very shortly after i rolled over after watching a tv show i took my glasses off and laid listening to the end of the show. i didnt want to miss it but ii couldnt really keep my eyes open i was really tired. but the first experience on monday, 9/8/14 which i was sleeping and i heard someone knocking on my outside door, then jiggling of my door  handle then my   door  flying open, before that i couldnt really open my eyes an when the door  opened it was my brother and i didnt feel scared anymore. but last night 9/12/14 i was terrified. i dont even feel i was asleep when it started. shortly after i laid down i could hear someone knocking on my door i was not getting up to answer it i remember every thing that happened with both of these experiences. after the knocking i could hear my screen shut this happened three times but the third time i didnt hear the screen shut. then i heard the door open slowly and quietly like they were trying to not wake anyone. i sleep on my couch because it is just me and my two young children here so i feel more safe sleeping there incase an intruder god forbid would break in and if my kids wake up i am here for them. after i hear the door, i hear light foot steps then i hear the voice of a man i know saying my name and wake up. i try to turn over and say why are you in here and i could barely understand what i was trying to say i couldnt have been asleep because i could still hear the tv program i was watching before i removed my glasses and rolled over to go to sleep this seemed to start shortly after i rolled over. then i hear him again say my name and wake up my eyes were open, but at first it was very hard to keep them open i was looking at my ceiling but couldnt turn my head far enough to see past my tv. i could tell he was standing at the edge of my kitchen right at the carpet line because i could hear his low voice pretty well like he was close to me i didnt get touched but my heart was racing with fear. i then tried yelling for my oldest son who is five but i couldnt even understand what i was saying and i kept trying to straighten my leg out to let him know i was awake it was almost like i was too tired to fully awake. i kept trying to move and speak but i was unable he kept saying my name and wake up every minute or so. i could feel his presence in the room and i could clearly hear what was being said on the tv. it seemed like all this happened in five minutes or so, now remember i really believe i was awake because i was looking at my ceiling and tv and what i heard on the tv corrosponded with the show that was on. i stretched my leg out to roll over and before i stretched out my leg, i managed to move from my right side to my back, but wasnt flat on my back then again i stretched my same leg out that i had already straightned out once before and did that three times at this point im terrified. then i heard him swirl his glass i could hear the ice hitting the glass and again i heard him say wake up finally after that i was able to turn over and immediately looked and noone was there. my heart was racing even faster at this point it was soo scary i couldnt stop looking around from my couch the door was shut what made me be able to lay back down was i realized i have a chain on my door and i would have heard my door being kicked in. it felt so real i really thought he broke into my house. as i laid back down i felt my pulse on my neck and it was racing faster. do you think that was a night terror?

    Hi Martha,

When you were 13 years old, did you mention what happened to either of your parents?

Now, you state you are 25 years old with severe anxiety and moderate depression problems, and on medication for these. Have any of medications changed in any way, in the respect of the make?

I have weird and strange dreams all the time, but with me I put it down to medications I am on. Sometimes I think I am awake and doing various things, when in fact I haven't moved at all. I even fall asleep and have conversations with my TV, yes it sounds stupid - but some medications do have weird side-effects.

I would suggest you visit your doctor, he/she may refer you to a sleep clinic just so they can monitor what is going on in your brain during REM or review your current medication considering they are always new and better ones coming out all the time.

    Regards,

    Les.

    Hi Martha,

I just remembered, there are new medications available these days, both for anxiety in one, but it would be up to your doctor what he/she recommends.

I sleeping problems I have are definitely medication related, but I am on so many that doctors have to be careful what they change, remove or add.

    Good luck,

    Regards,

    Les.

I would say, don't over complicate it. You don't feel safe, anxiety makes you edgy and you have nightmares. Solve it by making sure you feel safe. Lower your stress if you can. Sure, medications can make it worse, for me melatonin makes my dreams worse. As  for the can't move, I had that too. Not many times. Bad for sure, but nothing you can do about it. It's also wierd when you think you woke up from a dream and later turns out that you are still dreaming. Stress. I hope you can do something about it.
