I think I have PMR?

I have suffered with terrible pain from my left shoulder down my arm to my elbow sometimes extending to my hand but only at night in bed (the arm sometimes gives a burning sensation as well) - when I get up and move the pain subsides - I have no stiffness, full range of movement with no associated pain and pride myself on being 8 stone, 57 years old and still running 4 to 5 miles a week and doing very intensive Pilates work outs twice a week.

I have no other pain anywhere else and lead a very active life - although now thinking about it - I need my sleep and get very tired in the evenings.

How do I find out if I really do have PMR - I had normal blood tests before Christmas as a check up - all normal.

Should I ask my GP to refer me to a rheumatologist?

I do not like the thought of taking steroids.

From what you describe are your symptoms - it doesn't sound like the symptoms of PMR. Go to Google or whatever search engine you use and read up on all the symptoms of this disease.

Good luck in finding out whatever is wrong with your arm and shoulder and may your healing be soon.

Hello there No I agree it doesent sound like the symptoms of PMR Pain is normally bilateral and is worse first thing in the morning as after lying in bed for so long you are very stiff and when you then try to move the muscles they then hurt This normally eases as the day wears on unless you sit still for a long period of time If you look up the symptoms and guidelines for PMR you will see the normal symptoms although not everyone does have raised blood levels Hope you find a pain free solution soon

    Hello

for defintive guidelines on diagnosis of PMR

either google BSR (British Society of Rheumatologists) or the NHS and then follow the links.

    Alernatively visits www.pmr-gca-northeast.org.uk

click on Useful Information on the left hand side of the home page, scroll down to the BSR Guidelines issued June 2009.

    Hope this helps.
