I had an 11 hour flight 4 days ago. Now I am constantly dizzy wen sitting up or standing. I am currently overseas and there is no avalable doctors except for emergency as it is a pubic holiday for another 2 days.  What should I do.  I am taking vitamins to help circulation because at first I thought it was low iron.

Is it spinning dizzy or lightheaded dizzy?  Any other symptoms?

      Also feeling nauseous

Spinning dizziness is usually caused by vertigo, loose otoconia in the canals of the Otoliths. Not sure where you may be but, usually Meclazine, Antivert, is prescribed for the spinning.  I am in the U.S. And these are over the counter drugs here.  Usually with vertigo you have associated nausea and vomiting as well.  Balance issues as well.  No other symptoms?

Sounds like vertigo.  If nauseous and vomiting as a result you could become dehydrated. That would be a concern and a need for treatment. Even with just spinning and nausea I would seek medical advice.  Not sure of your age but, blood flow or some other issue could be present.

I am in Japan on holiday, so I am unsure whether they will be over the counter drugs. Yes I am having trouble balancing when I stand up and try to walk, I haven't felt like throwing up however.

BPPV is the most common condition causing spinning dizziness but, not sure that I would wait two more days to see someone.  Along with vertigo these are possible symptoms of other more serious issues.

Thanks for your advice, I managed to get to a clinic which specialised in head/ ear health and after a quick look at my eyes I was told I have menieres and recieved an injection and  2 days worth medication.  The dizziness has now been reduced to very little smile and I will find a doctor in two days who can extend my medication.  Once I return back to NZ in 2.5 weeks I will consult a doctor there for a check up as I haven't been given a definate diagnosis.  I just hope that this medication I am on will improve and correct my condition. Thanks again for your kind advice

    Hi Lisa, Ben here.

I have three things to say:

1).  There must be at least a dozen different kinds of things that can cause dizziness.  From heart problems to spinal problems, from equlibrium (inner ear) problems to blood sugar.  There are just too many to list.  But know this:

2).  Antivert and Mechlizine are motion sickness medications.  You could purchase some kind of motion sickness medication without a prescription over the counter.  It shouldn't matter where in the world you are.  If people there travel, someone gets motion sickness and there should be something for sale to help with it. But that is probably not going to help you because:

3).  If you are in good health, and not requiring blood thinners or mood altering drugs, not diabetic, no heart problems etc,  then I concur that you probably have BPPV, and there is really no reason to wait for a health care professional to put yourself through the Eply maneuver or another maneuver called the half-somersault.  If you google these maneuvers you will see that they are not that hard to attempt yourself.  Just be careful not to fall down and hurt yourself doing them.  If you have indeed BPPV and you successfully execute one of the maneuvers correctly relief can be immediate.  Otherwise it won't hurt you to try.

There does not seem to be a magic bullet drug that will fix you up unless you are feeling nausious, then the motion sickness may help.

But please do follow up with a doctor eventually.

    Hope this helps.

    Ben

It sounds like my BPPV. Be careful not to fall. That was my main concern. I am using a rollator because of the dizziness and other health issues. Mine is much improved but it took a couple of months for improvement. All the best!

Does the room spin as well?  After taking a long flight it may be you have Labyrinthitis. I think you should use the Emergency doctor who may give you a jab, then 24 hours later you should be feeling better.

    Good luck

Good to hear.  Glad you decided to seek out some medical help.  Meniere's would be hard to diagnose with one visit and looking into your eyes.  Sounds like the medication may resolve the issue for you.

      Take care.
