I've been taking propranolo since 1/12/13, I started on 40mg a day & within 3 months it went up to 60mg a day then 60 mg twice a day 6 months later, now I'm on 80 mg twice a day. I have Familal Tremors & propranolo is the only thing that I can take there is a barbiturate the doctor tried but I had a bad reaction to it. I to have gained 40 pounds in the last three years, I have tried so hard and I keep gaining. I am stuck on this till I die. I hate it.

Awww I am sorry honey. I too have gained weight on propranolol. It might be worth mentioning this to your doctor though to see if there is anything else they can do to help with the weight gain? I find with medications that cause weight gain it is normally because they increase your hunger. Is there any chance you are eating more now than you were when you first started? Perhaps talking to your GP armed with a food and drink diary for two weeks will help them establish if eating is the cause, if it isn't there may be other ways they can help. If it is, simple techniques like drinking water just before you start to eat can be a great technique.

Being stuck on medications with bad side effects suck, particularly long term, so I feel your pain. Fingers crossed the doctor will be able to offer at least some helpful advice! I know there are medications that can help you lose weight, but I am not sure they would work if you are already on a healthy diet and even if you aren't they may not be suitable with your other meds... but there is at least some hope. Unfortunately 6 of the medications I am on cause weight gain so I feel like I am losing the battle too but I was given very cheap gym entry under the exercise refferal scheme which has helped a great deal. It might be worth asking if there is something like that in your area? Because of my physical health issues I was given a personal trainer who showed me how to exercise without hurting myself and showed me what exercises I can and can't do.

I guess what I am trying to say in a very long winded way is don't give up, there is always hope and there may be things out there that can help you. xxx

    Hey!

Propranolol is a beta-blocker. Beta-blockers basically slow down the heart-rate, which will slow you down by blocking the action of hormones like adrenaline. So it's no surprise you've gained weight!

An alternative, Primidone, generically called Mysoline, might be a better fit. What you should do is ask your doctor about Primidone or two other applicable seizure drugs, gabapentin (Fanatrex, Gabarone, Horizant, Neurontin) or topiramate (Topamax, Topiragen).

    Good luck!

I feel your pain, I take propranolol 80mg slow release for dystonic tremor along with clonazepam which will be for life. I hate my 'new body shape' I have def put weight on my midriff and stomach areas despite not changing my diet. I've been a slim size 10 all my adult life so it's disheartening.

So am now not eating anything sweet and nothing after 6pm, I'll let you know if that makes any difference in a couple of weeks.

The plus side is that the meds work !!
