I’ve been prescribed Andronic Acid once weekly for Osteoporosis but I’m worried about side effects. I have CKD 3b, hypothyroidism and hypoparathyroidism. I really would be grateful for other patients experience of using this medication.

Did you have a DXA scan and do you know your t-scores?

Yes had Dexa and t-scores were -3.5 in hip, spine and forearm. i know this isnt great but the side effects of AA sound worse than the diagnosis to me?

Your decision of course. I know what I would choose, but as my results were never worse than -2 it's not fair for me to compare with yours. It's now thought that one should only take the OP med for a couple of years so you get the best result and the lowest likelihood of the bad side effects. If you want to read about a way you can try the natural stuff you could google healthunlocked my osteoporosis journey for an account of what I've done. I do know people with worse t-score than mine who have also tried similar methods, and they do in fact seem able to improve their bone density without medication.

The biggest risk for fracture, no matter what one's bone density, is falling. So along with the right kind of food, a few supplements and appropriate exercise, it's important to maintain a good sense of balance and avoid risky situations. With regard to the spine there are ways of moving which lower the risk of causing compression fracture. If you can consult with a physiotherapist knowledgeable about osteoporosis you can get a lot of good advice and a few exercises and techniques. I was able to get information through a program offered at my local hospital, although I did have to wait some months to get into a session.

Thanks for your reply Anhaga and apologies for slow acknowledgement. I'm going to delay treatment until I speak to my Renal Cons next month. In the meantime I've been invited to a seminar run by NOS, so will attend that and hear other patient stories.

      Thanks again.

That's a great idea. Do report back about the seminar and tell us how it went. 😃
