I've been taking 15-20mg of Prednisone daily for seven years. Is there hope to wean off?!

I'm currently 34 years old.

In 2012 my GP prescribed a tablet for me saying it would rid me of all my eczema. That tablet was an Immuno-suppresant called Cyclosporin.

Unfortunately I proceeded to take this daily drug for most of 2012, but did so without blood tests.

I ended up in hospital by the end of the year with renal failure. They later found it was because of the Cyclosporin.

By now my body was addicted to Immuno-suppresant drugs, so I was put onto Prednisone and have been taking it ever since.

I'd love to stop taking Pred. It's hard to find anyone here who has an answer that doesn't involve weaning onto another Immuno-suppresant drug.

Has anyone had success in tapering off Prednisone after a long course? Please help.

Cheers.

Hi KJWnz , it is possible but takes quite a lot of input from your clinician as well as from you.

    What country are you in?

As a retired RN who cared for many long term Prednisone users, I recommend getting your pharmacist involved as well. People wean off Prednisone all the time who are on it short term. Not sure about weaning off for the length of time you have been on it. My guess is that if you do, they will wean you off in very, extremely small increments over many months under the supervision of your physician who prescribed it. A second opinion from another specialist well versed in managing patients on Prednisone may serve you well too.

    Best of luck!
