I’ve been taking Celexa for 2 weeks and am a bit freaked out!

I’ve been on 10mg of Celexa for two weeks and have lost 7 pounds and it would be a lot more if I didn’t force myself to eat. (I could probably not eat at all) I have real bad health anxiety and it’s freaking me out. I have also been extremely depressed and have some stomach pain and nausea. Anyone else experience this?

I definitely have stomach and back pain. When I do eat it seems as if I need to go to the restroom fairly quickly.

Hello, the symptoms you have mentioned are quite normal for someone starting an anti depressant. Anti depressants usually increase your anxiety initially, which is what is causing your symptoms. After another 2 to 3 weeks, they should die down. Then as the celexa starts to get to work on your anxiety and depression, you should slowly and gradually start to feel better. For a lot of people starting an anti depressant initially makes them feel worse, before starting to get better. Once your anxiety starts to drop, your appetite will slowly return. The process does take along time. I found eating a lot of bananas and milkshakes made it easier to eat going through this stage. Have a read through the other posts on here to see that other people are experiencing similar symptoms. Make sure you cut out all drinks with any caffeine in them, as they will not help your anxiety. Hope this helps.

    Hi

I am up this morning on my second day of 10ml of celexa.

Feeling very ancious my body feels funny and I feel like I want to cry all the time and scared at the moment. I'm completely off my food but also force myself to eat something small. I've bought some build up milkshakes that you can get from most chemist's that are full of vitamins and minerals. I've been through this before so I know what it is even though I'm still feel scared it's the meds making me worse at the beginning and I know they will eventually ease. Hope this helps. Your appetite will come back its just a side affect.

    TC,

I’m on 6 months on 10mg and doing great. I didchave the symptoms you are having. I had to force myself to eat. Very important to eat something when taking the med. it minnimises the side effects and drink a full glass of water. I totally agree with Nigel cut out caffeine. You will be able to introduce it back into your diet later on. The beginning is hard to adjust for some people. I had gotten just about every side effect there was and then some. This forum helped me to stay focused and continue with it even though I wanted to stop it. I’m so glad I stayed with it. I wish I found this med years ago. I suffered many years with anxiety and panic attacks. Good luck be positive and strong. We are here for you!

Will, this is Nancy, I haven't noticed any change with the celexa helping with my anxiety yet, going into wk 6. Why wouldn't it help yet? Have to depend on the lorazapam to quell the, anxiety. On fact, the celexa seems like its still raising my anxiety. Any thoughts. Thanks my friend

      Nancy,

I was taking Xanax for the anxiety and also to sleep. Even now after 6 months I still take low dose of Xanax as needed. Not to often but some nights I need to sleep so I’m refreshed for my stressful days at work. My job is very high stress.

Your fortunate your dr gave you a Benzo to help with the anxiety. I read a lot of people get refused benzodiazepines from their dr.

Thank you all very much. This makes me feel a bit better. I was doing some reading last night and from what I've read, it looks like Nexium intensifies Celexa. I am on 80mg of Nexium a day. Does anyone have any experience with these two together?

I dont know why, but i googled the combination of celexa and nexium. There do seem to be issues with taking both. The nexium intensifies celexa like you say, think its because it slows down metabilization of celexa, so i suppose over a period of time, you can build up more than you take daily. Read one article saying celexa should be limited to 20mg, with nexium, as this would mean you wouldnt exceed the max 40mg recommended. As you are on only 10mg, you should be fine, but worth speaking to your doctor, as potentially you could have levels of 20mg of celexa in you. You arent in any sort of danger on 10mg, but its worth speaking to your doctor about it. All the side effects you mentioned you have are pretty common for most people.
