I've had psoriasis on the palms of my hands for about 3 years.

The dryness causes cuts and splits to bleed on my hands when touching the simplest item.  i have been to 4 dermatologists who have never suggested an oral medication, just topical ointments that do not help.  i'm leery of using oral meds due to the side effects but am willing to try as i'm so very tired of the pain.  i have little to no itching.  I'm interested in the types of oral meds and if tests are required to be performed to prevent other illnesses as side effects.

    Hi Barbara,

Acetretin and Methotrexate are 2 commonly prescribed. Look them both up online. Both are powerful drugs=potential adverse reactions=potential results. I developed methotrexate induced hepatitis in 2012 which is why I stress to people on this forum the importance of fortnightly blood tests. This is not to scare you Barbara as I know many people who take the aforementioned drugs without problems. Do some research and discuss with your dermatologist. Good luck.

Hi Barbara, the longer you can stay of systemic drugs, the better for you but the topical drugs are obviously not helping you.  Have you discussed this with your Dermatologist?  Are you currently under one?

All the drugs cause side effects, some people suffer more than others.  You really need to talk to your Dermatologist & if he recommends something that you don't want to take, then you can say no.

    Good luck

Have you tried Unguentum M cream available online recommended for dry scaley itchy skin. It's  a skin protectorate and moisturizer. I have used it for many years. Apply anytime as often as needed. I recommend applying liberally at night. Soak 2 cotton gloves in very warm water and wring out. Apply cream to hands then put damp warm gloves on, put a dry pair of gloves over them and leave them on overnight. I find if I am disciplined and do it every night when my hands are sore they will usually heal after a week or so. I start the process as soon as hands are looking/feeling dry and flaky I can usually stop the deterioration in a few days of following this routine. If your hands are still very itchy then its possible that a bacteria could have superimposed itself in the raw areas and will prevent healing. If so, ask the dr. about anti bacterial meds.

You might want to try a anti fungal and anti septic like witch hazel non alcohol. I've met quite a few people on here who have had success adding those to their other lotions and creams with glycerine and apple cider vinegar. And the best way to beat the dryness and the painful splits is occlusion. I have had success with it for years. Plastic wrap or gloves after applying your creams even just plain Vaseline over nite. This way the skin will absorb thru the deep layers of the skin to speed up heeling. I avoid any script cream or lotion that contains alcohol. And avoid hand sanitizer and anti bacterial soaps of any kind. Use oatmeal soap or pure glycerine. Works well on feet too!

    Good  Luck.
