I've started having complications after surgery.

I started having problems with pilonidal abcess's in around March last year, throughout the year I was having operations every 8 weeks (as soon as the previous one healed it would come back) as we got to December time it was around every 2/4 weeks I was requiring an incision and drainage. After months of feeling run down and having to quit my job I was finally offered a wide excision and primary closure of the pilonidal sinus. It all went well and I am now about 8 weeks post op. My last consultation went well and I was discharged, however I have still been experiencing a lot of pain around the area and recently when opening my bowels a lot of blood is present (doesn't appear to be from the wound/scar) . Is this normal? My consultant didn't seem concerned about the pain but some days I struggle to even walk let alone sit down..

Hi Charlotte
i started about 3 weeks ago with a Pilonidal sinus never heard of them before, I was in that much pain but couldn't understand why, anyway I had to go to out of hours surgery, but just before I got them in burst, and like you I had blood etc.
I was given a course of antibiotics, but had to go back had another two lots of antibiotics, which is helping a bit but it's still there so I will have to go back again, I don't know much about Pilonidal sinus but I think I would go back to my gp if you are still in pain... Kim 😊

Hi Charlotte,
If you were prescribed pain killers for your surgery and the surgery itself could of made you constipated which would then result in hemiroids. I've gone through 5 surgeries over my pilonidal cyst in the last 5 years so this is an unpleasant consequence ive had to deal with too. When you go to the bathroom it can cause them to bleed and become more inflamed which would then explain the pain your feeling when you sit and walk. If the blood is red and not coming from the incision it's most likely coming from hemiroids. Use baby wipes after going to the bathroom and get a cream for them and try to sit on a donut to ease pressure. Also I have found that taking mineral oil before bed makes the stool soft allowing them to heal. You should go to your general doctor regardless just to make sure everything is ok. I hope this helps , I know I was very scared the first time it happened to me. Good luck
