I was diagnosed with glandular fever 4 months ago. I am still exhausted.

I am still not able to go to work or drive or do household chores.  Does anyone have any advise?

I no longer have a sore throat, swollen glands, fever, enlarged liver or spleen.  I am 61 years old and am quite depressed that that the fatigue symptoms have not resolved. My doctor says this happens sometimes for older people, that it can take months to get my energy level back to normal.

Is this what others have experienced?

    Hi everyone,

?Sorry ive not been on the site for awhile, ive been thinking of you all. I've been up and down, more down with this crazy virus. i will feel a bit better, do a few more things and then wham - back in bed or on the couch. In addition, I was diagnosed with osteomyelitis in my right ring finger  2 days ago, and am getting antibiotics through a picc line in my arm. I had osteomyelitis 3 years ago in a different finger, i needed 2 surgeries plus a picc line to clear that up, I'm not diabetic so have no idea why this keeps happening. This is all adding to my anxiety and depression.

?Thanks Craig for your encouraging words.

      HI Andrea,

So sorry to hear about the other issues you are having to deal with as well as the glandular fever, what a rubbish time you've been having. Thinking about you. It doesn't mean to say it will be that way forever though, I really do still believe there is a great recovery for you Andrea, and that it's not far off and will start to manifest itself in how you feel and your daily circumstances.

Remember not to put too much stress on yourself, I totally understand the anxiety and depression, it's awful and it just seems like a spiral that goes out of control at times. But remember try to keep perspective and remember that things will get better in time, very hard to comprehend I know when you are living the horrible feelings and virus on a daily basis.

Remember still try to do some things you enjoy, I really believing distraction and de-stressing can help greatly in recovery. But it's about the balance again and not doing too much either, so don't lock yourself away and do nothing but don't overwork or do too much either - listen to your body is the key and some days or weeks you will need to rest more than others - and that's okay. If some weeks you feel you are going more backwards don't panic because it happens sometimes, you will go forwards again and overall.

Jeffrey, hang in there too thinking of you I know it's been such a tough time for you. I really believe in your recovery and that you will see much healthier and happier days ahead.

      Take care

      Craig

I was feeling well enough to go to a family birthday party at my sisters house for my 13 year old niece.  We all had a really good time.  Now that I am home I feel panicked and like I am going to cry--all for no reason.  Guess I need to rest and rest and rest.

Take care Gerbear. It's so hard when symptoms hit out of the blue. No wonder you feel like crying. Rest up and hope you feel better tomorrow.

Gerbear so sorry to hear you didn't feel great after the party, I hope you are feeling a bit more settled now. It really is like a rollercoaster going through the draining emotions and feelings of this virus, but remember you're making progress overall and the time will come sooner than later when you feel strong enough before doing these things, you feel strong during it and you still feel well and just a normal level of tiredness after it - your body's resilience will return I really and truly believe that for you.

You're making progress even though it doesn't feel that way. You will recover and have the freedom to do things without feeling physically punished for doing them again - you definitely will reach that stage without any doubt.

      Take care and don't worry

How is everyone going? I have officially hit the 1 year mark - wow. This has without a doubt been the worst and most challenging year of my life. I have missed so much work, my business is basically on hold.. My whole life has been on hold!

These past few weeks have been relatively good. Minimal physical symptoms, very occasional dizziness but it's manageable. I usually feel my weakest in the mornings but after breakfast i feel stronger. My main issue now is trying to bounce back from the mental toll that epstein barr takes. Being unwell for so long really drains your happiness and stress tolerance. I've had severe anxiety which i'm treating now with medication and seeing improvement. Fingers crossed this next year brings full health at some point. I recently turned 27 and i'm hoping to be able to enjoy the rest of my 20's!

      Hi Aquin,

Oh what a terrible year and I don't forget either how awful a year it was for me too when I had it, so just want you to know I'm still thinking about you.

The good news is I really believe you will have weathered the worst of the storm now, from a personal experience, although maybe you didn't quite feel totally back to 100% in the second year, it is like a walk in the park compared to the first year. The improvements will keep on coming and slowly your health and confidence will return, and the anxiety will disappear and this whole episode will fade away over time. Just wish could speed everything up for you, but you are definitely well on the way and still fully believe in your recovery!

I was exactly the same age as you when I took the virus Aquin, and you will be able to get back to enjoying the rest of your 20s again, rest assured!

I am at the 10 month mark in recovery--expecting 2017 to be a better year!  I have spent this entire week at home resting. Last Saturday I woke up with a UTI infection. Went to the doctor and got antibiotics right away.  Then later that day I went to a funeral for a family friend.  I only stayed for one hour, just enough time to go to the service and then express my sympathy during the food/social time.  By the time I got home, I knew that I had overdone it.  My energy level was at 0.  Thankfully my job working 2 days a week was cancelled for that week and next week I am only scheduled one day.  Glad that I can rest.  I have been embroidering pillow cases as Christmas gifts.  It feels fabulous to be able to accomplish something!  Several months ago I was still too weak to sit up and do embroidery.  Excited to see improvement!

thanks for sharing your recovery story, Aquin.
