I was diagnosed with Interstitial Cystitis yesterday...

HI! Im a 23 year old female from South Africa. I was diagnosed with IC yesterday, and it reasonably scary reading articles and forums about IC, needless to say none of which are from South Africa.

I am going for a Cystoscopy next week and Im terrified. ( I have an extreme fear of needles, which doesnt help this much)

In S.A. I will have my cystoscopy under anethsetics, so I wont feel the actual procedure- but Im more nervous of side effects afterwards, and the pain? Any advice will possibly make this easier...

Thanks smile

I had this done whilst I was having botox injections in my bladder. Is it local or general anaesthetic? If it's local you will feel uncomfortable but shouldn't hurt. You may also get a bad bout of cystitis after it as there are foreign objects going inside! But you should be given antibiotics for this. I also felt quite bruised after it. But not many feel that way. My dr was not so gentle!!

You will be fine though. Just relax as much as you can and hopefully they can sort your problem out as soon as possible for you!!

Unfortunately for me, the botox did not work so I am awaiting alternative treatment.

    Good luck x

    Hi Kate

Sorry to hear you have been diagnosed with IC.

I was diagnosed in 2013 but the diagnosis wasn't confirmed until I had a Cystoscopy which was done under a general anaesthetic so didn't feel a thing. Once I'd had it done & come round I felt uncomfortable, but like I had a water infection. The first time I passed water after the procedure was painful but it eased quickly, you just need to drink plenty of water to flush your system. By the next day the pain had gone. My treatment after the diagnosis was injections once a week for 6 weeks of something called Cystostat which I'm told is something your body naturally produces so is just a top up. It apparently leaves a protective lining of the bladder wall to help ease symptoms. Unfortunately there is no cure for IC, they can only help by managing your symptoms. I still have the injections once a month which are helping me. You can also follow IC friendly diets (just google it) Many foods can trigger a flare up & also stress. Hope this is of some help!! Anything else you would like to know I'm more than happy to help x
