I was diagosed with PMR just over 3 weeks ago and put on Predisolone 20mg once a day for two weeks

After two weeks my doctor told me to reduce the dosage to 15mg once a day which I've been taking for the past week.  However, almost from the start, although the pain and stiffness of the PMR has virtually disappeared, I feel nervous and anxious most of the time and my legs in particular feel very weak and I'm frightened of losing my balance.  I reported this to my GP and he suggested reducing the dosage again to 10mg and 15 mg on alternate days which I started doing today, having taken 10mg this morning. I've felt quite wierd all day and my legs feel worse than ever.  Has anyone else experienced this and does it eventaull get better?

Hi Fran, I had a similar experience when starting prednisolone, my doctor explained in simple terms that prednisolone stimulates the liver to 'dump' glucose stores into the blood stream if your not used to running on higher blood sugar levels you can experience symptoms similar to a hyper glycemic attack. For me symptoms stopped after lowering prednisolone dose.

I had a spell of wobbliness for a few weeks, but your post alerts me to the fact that it doesn’t happen any more.  See, there is hope. smile

Thank you, I hope you're right as I feel awful today. Have just walked back from my son's house which I less than 5 minutes away and didn't think I was going to make it my legs felt so weak. I find this so frightening. 2 weeks ago I could do the circular walk of our village, took about an hour, no problem. I just wonder what is happening to me !

It's very frustrating Fran, but it's not forever, as long as you don't push yourself. You are not that fit woman you were a few weeks ago, you have a serious chronic illness which does its own thing. We just have to pace ourselves and try not to stress about it. Stress makes it so much worse. Gosh! I remember being you 2 years ago. It really does get better. I remember tears and misery at times early on. Hope you have had a rest and are now feeling a bit better. X

Thank you for all your help and advice Sheila, it's really comforting to be able to talk to people in a similar position.  Unfortunately I'm one of life's worriers, especially where my health is concerned, and being on my own doesn't help but I am trying really hard not to stress too much about it however, as you obviously well know, it's not easy!  Yes, I did feel a bit better after resting for about an hour - thank you.

Hello Fran. Sorry to hear of your PMR diagnosis as each of us on this forum knows it can be frightening and very frustrating as it turns your life upside down. I have had my symptoms a year but wasn't officially diagnosed till last July.  It's been a roller coaster ride since then This forum has helped me tremendously because we all have different symptoms as well as side effects from the Prednisone and being able to read and share here with those who have first hand experience makes the road less unknown. One thing we do all share in common is the pain PMR causes. I did not experience the weak shaky legs but have had myriads of other symptoms and side affects. Things can change from day to day so continue to read and share on the forum and of course we all hope your days get better as you walk this path.
