Hey, so usually when getting a blood test for HSV 1 or 2 or both you get info about your IGM and IGG . IGM refers to a recent infection so if someone has just gotten HSV or in some cases (rare) has an outbreak it can be positive. However, after a while, when the body has produced enough antibodies for that infection IGM tend to become negative in most cases.

For a person who has never had hsv 1 or 2 or both for example, IGG and IGM would show to be negative.

IGG on the other hand informs you about antibodies that form way after an infection . Meaning the person has had it once in their lifetime, but it's not really possible to say when.

Swab test usually help for a more accurate diagnosis.

Dunno if that makes sense ..
