IBS ?

So I keep getting a bad stomach on and off that ranges from times with reflux , nausea , loss of appetite and intermittent bowel issues , which I currently have . Its like I have taken a laxative after being really constipated . Sometimes I get a bit of blood , but I do have a small pile (sorry for tmi ) . I have just turned 52 and my peri symptoms change at different times . I have had lots of issues for over four years now , nothing ever been found . I have had ibs over the years , probably ever since I started my periods . Should I be concerned as my anxiety goes into overdrive . My family are fed up listening to me and say that theres nothing wrong with me and its just my menopause which doesnt help when you feel ill and fearing the worst . My periods are all over the place , sometimes have missed months only for it to be regular again , then late and last month less then threes weeks between. They are now heavier and very painful plus I get lots of brutal migraines and headaches .

You arent alone, i have dealt with the horrible stomach issues myself and my family thinks im bonkers too i think. I even had the test done for celiac disease and food allergies but nothing gives me any answers. I,too, have been dealing with the anxiety, for one whole year terrible headaches but they arent as bad now, periods all over the place now they are 3-6 months apart! And during that whole time i deal with the stomach issues and feel like i have constant pms. Im 41 years old but these symptoms became intense in the past 4 years too. i want it to end as im tired if being sick and not having a life! But you arent crazy and you arent alone.

This is totally normal and you're not alone. Our digestion slows down in perimenopause. That's why we get all of the stomach issues. Most months I have chronic indigestion and heartburn two weeks leading up to my period. I can't keep anything down AND I can't lose weight! If I'm puking all the time, you'd think I would at least lose some weight, but nooooooo ... !!!

Wow really!? oh man im as sick as you are describing but i cant gain weight when i can finally eat! And if i do gain the weight back i lose it all during ovulation and period time again! I look like a skeleton ick!!! So i guess count yourself lucky that you look healthy even tho you dont feel like it. I feel like the man off the movie thinner....im just waiting for the guys in the white coats to rush me to an eating disorder facility even tho that is so far from the problem!

Hi Jane
I have had bowel issues ever since peri started... For me it is mostly diarrhea, then normal for a while and then diarrhea again.
I also deal with anxiety and I think my bowel issues gets worse when I am anxious.

Hi! I am 52 as well.Yes, I do have IBS. I try to follow a list of foods I can and can't eat. It's called the low-fodmap diet. It helps and I try to stay away from the foods I can't eat but there are some that I can't do without. Like mozzeralla cheese on pizza. I work retail and am too tired to make the homemade kind so it's bad bathroom time for me when I choose pizza for dinner. And it started about 2 years before I started the perimenopause with the heavy bleeding and tiredness. ( I have had a Progesterone IUD put in and it helped the bleeding. Now I have spotty periods and they can last for three weeks. It's better than the heavy bleeding though.) I have a tummy now and I think it is mostly due to the IBS because when it is not bothering me it isn't as big or noticable and I feel thinner. The one problem I have because of the IBS or maybe because or the IUD is that I can't bear to have pressure on my stomach. I get to feeling sick if there is. Thank goodness for mid rise pants and the stretchy waist pants that can simply sit below my belly.
My migraines are triggered by getting too tired mostly. As a result I do not work out and I do try to take naps. If I feel the need to do some kind of exercise we have walking trails around the city that I have used.
I am able to take a prescribed medicine for my headaches that helps a lot. I have used Acetaminophen, Aspirin and Diet Coke with caffeine and with sugar in it. It helps if I'm not to sick to take it.
I am so sorry you are having troubles and hope they can be remedied or at least made better in some way.

Hi Jane,
This is my life. When our bowels are in an uproar, the rest of our lives are compromised.
I manage it a few ways, diet and probiotics. I am allergic to fruits with a pit, onions and eggs. I am intolerant to dairy and gluten. All of these stupid issues came after 45 when I started peri. So I cut all of these out.
Have you tried an elimination diet? I would start by eliminating dairy and gluten since they are the most likely culprits. Just for a week. Just to see how you feel. I would also add a probiotic to help balance the intestinal flora that absolutely changes with peri. I take one that is known to bind up loose stools.
(My GYN prescribed anti depressants for my brain fog and sent my entire digestive system into an uproar. It will be weeks recovering. I have to be so careful when I ingest in peri. Ugh.)
