Ibs?

about 10-12 days ago i began to feel bloated and feeling full. motions normal, i usually go in the morning, sometimes with an urgancy. about a week ago i had a small stabbing pain in my back, ive not taken and painkillers, the bloatedness is mostly all day. its slightly worse after eating.

went to the doctors on monday and she gave me peppermint oil, not feeling any better, or worse. she said take them for 2 weeks. then might have to have blood test, what would that be for? i had a blood test a few weeks ago and all fine; liver, kidneys, iron. what else would they test?

any advice on ibs. thanks

It sounds like indigestion to me.

Your doctor should be able to treat this.

Work on your diet and lifestyle. Eat small meals 5-6 times a day. Walk for at least 30min. Avoid spicy/oily foods.

Normally the medications involve PPIs like Nexium and Prokinetics like Domperidone/Levosulpiride,

antacids like Gaviscon, and probiotics. Sometimes laxatives are also useful, in case you have constipation.

Until you consult your doctor, you can try this hit and trial method:

      1. If you consume dairy products in any form, quit for a couple of days. If you feel significant improvement, this could be lactose intolerance. If no improvement, follow the next point.
      2. Similarly try going gluten free for a couple of days. Significant improvement means you are allergic to gluten. No improvement? Next point.
      3. Quit coffee, tea, soda, smoking, alcohol for a couple of days. Significant improvement means your stomach is sensitive to caffeine, nicotine and alcohol. No improvement?
      4. Consult your doctor for a thorough evaluation.

Yes indigestion can persist for long periods of time if not treated.

hi mrssnowy, i think you need more information, your doctor maybe trying to rule things out which could cause the problem. non-stop burning could be gastritis, it's pockets of acid that gets stuck and you'll know if you have it! try looking at your diet and try to find out when you have this by working out what you've eaten. don't cut lots of food out or anything like that yet as you don't know what this is.

thanks i dont think its that, the discomfort is not in my upper abdomen, it is below my belly button. it doesnt hurt, its uncomfortable and doesnt go away after going to the toilet.

ah ok, misunderstood, gastritis can go anywhere, i wonder if this is muscular? have you had a cat scan?

no, the doctor has given me peppermint oil to try, no change yet. she said to try them for two weeks. it doesnt hurt its just uncomfortable, most of time, i sleep ok.

ok, at least you have something to try, i only asked because mint can either help or hinder! i can't have it, i'd be in agony.

While this may well be a form of IBS , as you are vegan I am wondering if its gynaecological. What are your periods like? These sort of symptoms in a lady of your age could point to an ovarian cyst. Would your doctor send you for an ultrasound scan? It may be worth mentioning.

      bloods all came back normal.

i go to the toilet as soon as i get up. it isnt diarrheoa but not solid either, 4-5 on the bristol scale. i dont really feel any better for going. sometimes i go twice and the second time is a but softer. i dont usually go again until the next morning. i sometimes feel better as the day goes on.
