My mum's doing OK, still a bit fearful but my sister and I make sure one of us is with her when she goes shopping now.
I'm a bit fed up, have a hospital appointment tomorrow. I've had a few operations in the last few years on my thumbs and hands due to arthritis. The last one was back in March. Since the cast came off in June (It took longer to heal than usual) I have had a terribly painful wrist and have had to wear a strong wrist support all the time. My thumb has pins in it and aches but I expected that.
So when I went for my final check up a month ago I told the surgeon, who said it was probably just the arthritis but he'd do an ultrasound to check.
I had the ultrasound a fortnight ago. The doc doing it was very nice and told me the results, but I have to pretend I don't know to the surgeon (sigh) when I go tomorrow.
I have large sharp arthritic oseophytes (lumps)in my wrist and they have rubbed on the big tendon coming down from the thumb to the elbow and made a big hole in it! This will probably mean another operation to mend the tendon and cut some of the lumps off and that's what I'm fed up with...As I have asthma it's always a bit chancy with the anaesthetic and I hate that bit.
Never mind I'll deal with whatever happens. So fingers (ouch!) crossed for me tomorrow.
Hope you really enjoy the chicken dinner, especially afterwards....keep up the good work and remember.. the power of positive thinking beats everything. I may just make a hottie bottle for my wrist as it's freezing here, take care, Fanny Jane.

When I saw you had posted I decided to abandon making a cake and logged on.
I'm thrilled that at long last you now have a better relationship with your gp, lots of proper results and a long term plan to follow. The dietician appointment, like Christmas, will be here before you know it.
The thing is you didn't give up, even when you were really low, so well done and I know that you are now on the way to sorting this all out . Also knowing what you have is half the battle of dealing with it.
Thanks for asking about my wrist. I saw my lovely surgeon, he really is nice and caring. He has put a steroid injection into the area for me, which will calm down all the inflammation and maybe help the hole to heal itself. In the mean time I have to keep it strapped and imobile until I see him again to give the wrist a chance to settle down.
I see him again on the 18th Dec when we will discuss how it is. If it's not much better then I may have to have an operation in the new year. I have told him I want to avoid that if possible, especially as I have another grandchild due end of January, so we are doing the softly, softly approach first.
I am 53, so only a few years older than you. I have had arthritis since I was a small child so I am very used to it all. Mind you I find the hands/fingers arthritis the hardest to deal with as it affects everything we do.
I had an ulcer about 20 years ago and after it healed up it's never come back. So fingers crossed that yours will heal quickly too. The Vitamin b12 shots will help a lot as well. Glad you've got the amitryptyline dose right too, the only way is up now.... you will soon be a new woman!
Take very good care of yourself, Fanny Jane.
So well done and Yipee for good days... may you have more of them than bad ones. I must go back to my cake and also pop a casserole in the oven for dinner.... guess what it is...chicken!

Hi Val, You don't say what exactly the pain medication is for, I presume IBS? There are loads of pain meds out there, mostly from the gp. You really need to go and have a good chat and find one that's best for you.
Paracetamol is a very good mild painkiller, to take now and again but you are right not for long term. Also there's no point in taking something that doesn't touch your pain. For long term pain refief there are better options.
Most people, start on something like Codeine- on it's own without paracetamol added ( co-codamol has both paracetamol and codeine) or Tramadol for moderate to severe pain. There are also anti-inflammatories, to be taken with a stomach protector, slow release 12 hour meds, low dose anti-depressants and transdermal patches that you wear for 3/7 days that bypass the stomach. There are anti-convulsants that help some people and then there are the higher grade medications. The only problem is most of these have side effects and sometimes these are hard to deal with.
Only a gp can prescribe any of these for you. If you are in pain you really should pluck up the courage and go and have a chat with your gp. I'm sure if he/she knows how uncomfortable you are you will be offered something suitable to try. If that doesn't work go back as sometimes it takes a few visits to get the right medication and dose that suits you.
You've obviously had a nasty experience. Try and put it behind you. What has happened to you is really quite rare and is unlikely to happen again. Myself and many thousands of other people have to take pain medications on a daily basis for years and are fine.
Pain is a horrible thing to live with but you can get help. I Hope you get something sorted out and feel better soon. Let us know how you get on, we all try and help each other here, Fanny Jane

Sorry for my absence.loads to do for uni. As I just read through the post I can see you all doing alright and getting great support.
I have been to the gp last week and as we already thought I am getting tested for a tummy bug to rule that one out.if it's not a bug my gp suggested that I could have ibs as it does sound more like.
Last weeks were fine for me and my tummy so I am very happy, just waiting for my results now.
Will let you know when I hear back.
C.
Oh and btw: my gp suggested me to look on this website to get some advise on ibs:-)

May I ask why you are so worried about organ damage? Paracetamol is a very safe medication as long as it's taken within the guidelines. Do you take the maximum dose everyday or is it something you take once or twice a day? It is the accumulated amount that builds up in our systems over years that does the damage rather than taking the recommended dosage.
Co-Codamol is the standard pain medication that both drs and hospital's give out for what is called moderate pain. It depends on your own body and what is causing the pain as to whether it helps you or not. Is it your tummy problem that's causing you the pain? Or something else?
If the co-codamol is having no effect whatsoever then you really need something stronger and your gp should recognise this. As a rule if anyone has stomach/bowel issues or has had an ulcer at any time, a PPI (Proton Pump Inhibitor) like Omeprazole (Kaz takes) and Lansoprazole (I Take) is taken once a day to protect the stomach. You may find that as you have had past ulcers a PPI will help settle your tummy down and you'd feel a lot better, then the co-codamol may work better for you.
You could try taking regular Gavison, which may help your tummy settle a bit until you get back to the gp.
It is hard to offer you any other advice. You say your gp said ignore it, do you mean the fact that you are worried about organ failure? I have taken prescription pain medications all my life due to an arthritic condition I developed at age 3 and I am still here in one piece 50 years later, I have a friend whose been on them for over 60 years. I always follow the dosage recommended by the doc, always with a biscuit/food/glass of milk. I have taken very serious medications for many months at a time and moderate ones most of that time as well. Pain is a nasty thing to live with and wears us down, which in turn makes us feel stressed and unhappy. If the pain is under control we can then get on with our lives.
Do you have a surgery that has several doctors? You could try seeing a different one in the surgery, even take a friend/relative with you for a bit of support. You need to express that the co-codamol is just not working for you and you need to get the pain under control. You also need to get to the bottom of why you are in so much pain. There may be a treatment that will help you and the pain will then subside and you can get on with your life. In the mean time try and eat a plain nourishing diet. Limit alcohol if you need to. Remember that we are what we eat, we eat junk we feel like junk, we eat well we feel well. Your body is the only one you've got, so look after it and it will last a lifetime.
I wish you the best of luck and hope that you can find some relief soon. There is help out there but you may need to push a bit for it, we are always here for a chat if you need it. Take care of yourself, Fanny Jane.

I have been diagnoised with IBS about 6 months now, I had a very bad 4th degree tear during a horrific labour recently. The recovery from this has caused my IBS or so I have been told. I am having a very difficult time pinpointing what foods to eat and not to eat. I have figured out a few thing that I simply cannot have and if it gives me relief I dont mind avoiding them. I have been reasearching different websites for lists of soluble, insoluble foods, recipes, tips etc but a lot of the info in conflicting. I am totally and utterly confused!! I need a reliable source or website that I can refer too. I seem to have diarrhoea in the morning, not much happening during the day and constipitation in evening and night, and a lot of flatulence in evening too, it can be really really upsetting. I am 26, this is taking over my life, I have been sleeping in seperate beds from my partner more and more just to save embarresment when I am having a bad night of it. It has totally knocked my confidence and I am afraid that I am getting obsessed with this. my baby is very good and I do not have any stress with him and my partner is very very supportive but I hate when (sorry for this) I am having really smelly farts as I feel so unattractive and paranoid. I have avoided certain social scenerios where I know I will most certainly have a flare up. I dont have any pain with this, my problem really is the embarresment of it all! Any advice on eating, flatulence/constipation tips would be very welcome. Thanks
