Ibs

Update, regarding my son on ibs symptoms. last time I spoke he was referred to peadiatriation who was not interested and done blood and stool test on my boy. Also he told me they were going to come back clear.

Well got the test back and bloods came back fine , but the stool test for calprotectin showed slightly high levels and can be seen with inflammation, he wanted my boy to redo the test which we are still waiting for results as they take 5weeks.

Im praying the results will show up again so he can get passed onto someone who specialises in digestive problems as this is been going on since birth and no one will listen and the poor boy been on laxitives most of his life .

even though it's my boy who suffers, it's affected me big time as a mother with depression. I've complained for so many yrs that I've got to the point I'm imagining his symptoms.

Does this test sound promising in getting answers. Just worried of being palmed of again.

    Hi

Calprotectin is a relatively new protein biomarker which is helping to save money for the NHS by preventing unnecessary procedures on patients by screening out patients with IBS who do not require endoscopies.

The symptoms of functional disorders such as Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) and organic Inflammatory Intestinal Disease (IBD) can be very similar in presentation but are two very different medical

But with your son having this at an early age if it comes back high again further investigations will be needing done.

You haven't listed other symptoms that your son is experiencing but with constipation could be ibd .I know its different tests for children but they will need to send him for a colonoscopy as the blood test comes back normal i dont know what markers they were looking for but a blood test would show inflammation in his colon too.

I would certainly push to get more tests done but try not to be alarmed to much i know its hard but hopfully it will find he has a lazy bowel and can be sorted with mild medication please keep us informed.

Well eventually when he was 3 yrs he was diagnosed lactose intolerant, which always caused him servere constipation . But even since being on lactofree milk. He suffers alternating stools. He could be constipated to loose and mushy, pencil stick type or normal looking but very dry. He can't digest Apple, cabbage, peppers, tomatoes , baked beans. Sometimes his stool can come in 2 different colours from yellow mushy and another part would be jet black and tarry. Blood test I think was for coeliac. At the moment his been giving laxatives to treat bowel overflow which as been on laxatives for yrs surely his bowels should be regulating by now. Every time I see the dr they always comment how full he feels. His immune system is terrible he suffers allergic conjunctivitis, he has allergy to the spring sun in April.

Poor we sole he's really gone through a lot .

There's something causing his intolerance for apples etc .You can get ibs in a child but with the Calprotectin being elevated there's definitely inflammation there .I would not be taking (nothing we can find) for an answer if it comes back high again as there's something causing these symptoms .

Thank you for replying, also my son is very short for our family. Peadiatrian said he was happy with weight and height. But when he sent the report to my dr . It shows his height and weight going down the chart since he last measured him, so it's obvious his not getting the nutrients from food. Plus he suffers fatigue at times at school which last a few days then he seems to pick himself back up. Then I get moaned at by the school saying he needs early nights. Despite I keep telling them if he falling asleep that means there something wrong with him. I see peadiatrian next week but don't think 2nd results will be back in time. so fingers crossed I will get answers

I am just giving you this story so it might help. When my son was born it was an extremely hot day and he couldn't latch. He was born at 6:40am. At midnight they gave up and finally decided he was dehydrated. From this his stool was too tough. When he passed the stool it created fissures. From then on he held it in for up to 10 days. At one point they were even thinking they may need to widen his passage. When we did finally see a specialist most of what we had been told was wrong and the cream we had been given was acidic. You try going the loo with acid in and on your bum. Long story a bit shorter he had toilet phobia. He would hold it in and not go. What we had to do was to create a relaxing atmosphere on the toilet. We don't tell him he has to go but he sits on the toilet whilst he reads to me and then I read to him. When he isn't thinking about it he goes. We do it the same time every day. Just before his shower for bed. We don't ever put stress on him to go. It's just a routine.

He now has Ibs. We take paracetamol and buscopan when he has an attack. It's mostly induced by stress. The key is you need fibre in the diet but not complex fibres. A central fuggle juicer would be great. I have one. It takes out the really tough fibre that your body struggles to digest but leaves in the easy to process fibre. Peach skins are a prime example of a complex fibre.

Re if he has stress talk about it. If he has problems with friends and bullies at school try the book bullies, big mouths or so-called friends.

The key is to find out the reasons behind what is happening. Their is no quick fix. Ibs can be for life or like my brother you can grow out of it.

My boy started at 3 days old constantly screaming day in day out and doing dark green frothy stools. Then we noticed baby jar foods agrievated him. We recently looked at the fod map plan and the foods to avoid seem to be the ones my son can't digest. You mention acidic well in the last yr my son gets a sore bum at times. On checking he goes through phases maybe once a month of red raw skin around his bum which we then just keep washing down with plain water as much as we can in the day . Trouble is my son has servere speech delay and as he had this from day one. If for example he does experience pain in tummy does he not tell me in his way because he had this from day one and thinks it's a normal pain.

We can only tell by his temper when things are wrong. Since a week before Xmas his tempers are getting frequent and we have also noticed he gone off food even he favourite meals. Not sure if my son would drink veggie juice but I will give it a try. He is also waiting for test to be done on adhd/ autistic.

I have 5 children 27,23,16,8,5 yrs he is number 4 child and he is the only one who has health issues.

I am a person who has suffered for 30 years until recently.  I discoverd after many test colonoscopies, Endoscopies, bioopsies of my small and large intestines, blood tests, cat scans, MRI's you name the test. Inflamation showed up constantly.  The end result was i had a food sensitivity.  Multiple physicians told me the following:

65% of all people with a norhtern Eurpean background and (%5 of people with irish descent have a food sensitivity or allergy to 5 basic foods. Wheat, Glutten, Soy, Lactose the sugar in milk, and Casin the protein in milk. As a child I had collic which the couldnt determine the cause. They discovered 35 years ago when I was 25 tht i had a lactose intolerance. Then 3 years ago I was diagagnosed with a very very high wheat intolerance. i also had far too much sugar in my daily diet Everything had sugar.  This along with my food allergy and having been treated for acne as an adollescent had sent my bowels natural flora way out of balance.  Since eliminating excessive sugar, wheat and dairy from my diet my IBS has gone away. I also take daily probiotics .  I have changed what i eat and all my blood values have vastly improved where my regular internist wanted to know what I did to loose the weight and lower all my bad values and raise all my good values.

My great grandmother was right.  "WE ARE WHAT WE EAT".

Find a physician who is in to hollistic and well as traditional medicine. Also check out "FOMAP". Changing what foods we eat together and in what order may also help your soon. GoOD LUCK!

    Former terrible IBS suffer.
