There are certain medications you can take.. Colpermin (peppermint oil) taken before you eat can calm things down.. it affects people in different ways. I have had it on/off for over 35 yrs. Stress is usually a trigger for me too.. if you get cramps Buscopan is quite good and over the counter meds for gas. Apart from that there is not much that can be done (watch what you eat when you have an attack) keep it bland and small meals during the day ..

Ditto but when you have had a stressful time it is difficult to stop it happening. I have had a few stressful weeks lately and weekends have included a lot of illness.

I still recommend exercise and drinking lots of water. I did well for a long time but taking on more responsibilities at work and being more stressed has led to more illness. Stress is very bad for IBS.

Thank you. I'm a social worker for learning disabilities which is incredibly stressful and demanding. I am due to see the GP about my BP so will talk to him about my IBS too

I'm just interested to know is ibs a combination of constipation then diarrea?

I have loose stools everyday not diarrea persay - I had semonella 5 months ago and I think I now have like ibs but i think stress is causing my symptoms now? I also don't really have pain often - just the urgency of needing to go asap.

How many others here have the classic symptoms?

    Or anything different.

I've tried no lactose or wheat nothing seems to change anything so I think nerves and depression are the culprits too?

Wishing you luck it's an awful thing to

    Deal with.

Stress is a definite trigger. Sometimes the meds work and sometimes they don't.. keep a record of what you eat too, some foods are triggers. Withme it's coffee/chocolate.. sometimes meat, whgolemeal bread.. it's a real drag as it can be such a fickle thing to deal with.
