IBS after Gallbladder Problems

Posted , 8 users are following.

Has anyone else had IBS since having Gallbladder removed? I have never had IBS but since having my GB removed I seem to have developed IBS. I still get the pain where my GB was and also in the same place on the opposite side of my abdomen and am beginning to wonder why I bothered. It was great having the 4 weeks off work but having the op to get it was not the best way smile

I had my gallbladder removed April 2015.

I am better than I was but have recently been diagnosed with a hiatus hernia and it is also probable that I have ibs.

However these things are liveable with and I would far rather be like this than I was when I had the gallstones.

Take care and keep in touch

      Cheers Sarah,

I am not sure which is worse, the IBS cramps or the pains from my GB ( which I still seem to be getting ). The hospital tells me that I can still get stones in the bile duct which might be causing the current pain sad

      Take care and god bless

Yes you can still get stones in the bile duct. I think if they take your blood this will show if you have stones there.

For me, what I am getting now is certainly better than the pain from the gallstones and I do not regret having my gallbladder removed.

My personal view is that there is no such thing as IBS.  They use that as a diagnosis far too easily instead of getting to the problem of why folk are having the problems they are having.

It does take a while for the symptoms to go down after surgery and for your body to get used to everything.

I had the pain in the left hand side and all the classic symptoms and it turns out I had gastritis in my stomach.

    Good luck getting sorted.

Yes you are correct regarding there is no such thing as IBS.  Will never forget having a particular horrendous pain.  Had been lying in agony in A&E for many hours -  Stomach extended and dire pain in my left.  This particularly arrogant Consultant examined me - looked at my notes and said there is no such thing as IBS !!!

After numerous tests I had a perforation in the bowel.

      Best wishes,

      Viv.

      Oh Viv,

I know the medical profession are divided but I think we are right to be cynical about it!

Oooh that sounds awful.  I hope you are ok now.

      Regards.

      Thank you LittleMissDolly,

Yes am OK at the moment - but have colonoscopies every 2 years.  I am so cautious when I get pain in the left now.  Whenever I have a "flare-up" now I do go straight to A&E (I know people will disagree about that !) but am frankly very scared if it is something as serious as a perforation.

      I was very frightened.

      Take care,

      Viv.

      Oh Viv,

I'm not surprised you were scared.

No, I think youa re doing the right thing.  You cannot be too careful after what you've been through.  You have to do that when you are sick.  Don't worry about what other folk think.  You do exactly what is right for you.

      Keep strong.

Hi I have had a pain on my left even before my GB was removed four years ago! The last time I went to the GP

He told me it was a floating rib? I have never heard of that! But now I a! Beginning to wonder about it

Hi!  I too, still get pain where my GB was.  Had it out in Nov 2014.  I have bouts of where I feel like I may have IBS - then it calms down for a while.  My neighbor warned me NOT to have it out - I believe this was why.  I also take 40MG of Nexium (prescription) every morning.  The past 24 hours have had terrible heartburn, chest pains on and off.  I had the same last year and went for a complete cardio work-up and nothing was found.  I'm taking tums and rolaids and will be hopefully seeing my primary doctor on Monday.  I want my GB BACK!!!

its no wonder many of us are scared to get the gallbladder out but i am so ill every day it cant be worse than that surely.  were you very ill when you got it out? or was it just occasional. as im always ill and i dont get short attacks they last for 3 weeks then i may  get some rest from it then another 3 weeks. was it like that for you.

Hi!  It appears to me that you could have a small hiatal hernia.  As for the bouts of IBS, if it's diarreha, you could have Bile Acid Malabsorption. Your liver is making more bile than your body can handle.  This can happen in about 10% of people who get their gallbladder removed. However, physicians don't usually remove an organ if it's functioning well and not diseased.  A diseased gallbladder can rupture or turn cancerous.  It's frustrating to have these problems to deal with!  I hope you get some answers and feel better soon!

My gallbladder issues would only flare up if I ate something rich.  Spicy.  It was def not functioning properly.  I wasn't always sick.  But when those pains came - they came.  I swear sometimes they did not take it out bc I get phantom pains where it was.  But I know they did bc I have acid reflux now and have issues with the bowels . .
